Hi All!
Most avid cyclists seem to be drawn to films where bicycles play a role or even a central role. Unfortunately, though they have bicycle content, not all are well-done. Still, when the weather is simply to bad for cycling, it is nice to throw another log on the fire, slip a DVD into the player, and lean back in a comfortable chair with a hot mug of tea and watch something bicycle-related.
An amazing number of these can be purchased from eBay or Amazon.com.
Here's my quick list, with brief synopses. Did I miss any? Of course I did! That's why I'm looking forward to your choices/picks/recommendations for bicycle-related films. My list is just a starter.
Best,
Dan.
American Flyers (1985)
Two brothers tackle the Hell of the West through the Rockies. Thin on plot and fairly unrealistic portrayal of racing tactics, but a lightning-fast wheel change by Rae Dawn Chong is worth seeing, as well as the old US 7-Eleven team and Coors Classic footage. Kevin Costner sports a moustache in this one.
Beijing Bicycle/Shiqi sui de dan che (2001, Chinese)
A seventeen-year-old country boy working in Beijing as a courier has his bicycle stolen, and finds it with a schoolboy his age.
Belleville Rendezvous (UK title; see "Triplets of Belleville" listing below)
The Bicycle Thief/Ladri di Biciclette (1948, Italian)
Poverty-stricken Antonio needs his bicycle to do his new job. But the same day he buys it back from a pawnshop, someone steals it, prompting him to search the city in vain with his young son.
Breaking Away (1980)
Working-class cycling youth from middle-America's car-culture enters collegiate bike race for the glory and honor of the home-town crowd.
Cyclo (1995, Vietnamese)
Young man needs a bicycle taxi for survival, but it is stolen. A dark and depressing film set in saigon's criminal underground.
The Day I Became a Woman (2000)
Three short stories about women in modern Iran, one about a woman who wants to enter a bicycle race and her husband who is very much against it.
Dead Certain/Un Affaire D'Hommes (1981, French)
Architect joins a bicycle racing group where a detective is member. He uses this friendship to cover the murder of his wife. Final confrontation is done using bikes, not guns.
The Flying Scotsman (2006)
Dramatized life story of innovative Scottish racer, Graeme Obree
Ghislain Lambert's Bicycle/Le Velo de Ghislain Lambert (2000/1)
French/Belgian comedic portrayal of Ghislain Lambert, a fictional road racer and team "water carrier".
Jour de Fete (1949)
French filmmaker/comedian Jacques Tati is a bike-riding postman attempting to modernize delivery service.
Jitensha (2009, Japan)
Story of a young man struggling to find meaning in life. In th emidst of utter despair, his bicycle begin to disappear, one part at a time. In respoonse to a note, he receives one in turn offering it back a piece at a time. As he puts his bike together piece by piece, he and his life are also reassembled.
The Kid with a Bike (2011, Belgium)
CTC's current recommendation, about a fatherless young man who falls into the care of a hairdresser, his most valuable possession: A bicycle.
Messengers (1999, Japanese)
Young career woman works for Italian fashion house -- till it closes. Making a run for it with the last company asset (a red Alfa Romeo) she collides with a bike messenger. Unable to pay the damage settlement, she works as a bike messenger.
Nebraska Supersonic (1999)
Three Nebraska three slackers start a bicycle courier service. Despite overwhelming naivete and odds, their business becomes a resounding success.
Quicksilver (1986)
Newly destitute ex-floor trader decides to become a bicycle messenger in NYC.
Pee-wee's Big Adventure (1985)

Ride of My Life: The Story of the Bicycle (C4TV, 2010)
Travelling author Rob Penn embarks on a world-wide search for the best hand-built parts, with which he plans to build his dream bicycle. Along the way he charts the social history of the pedal-powered conveyance, and explains why it is one of humanity's greatest inventions.
6-Day Bike Rider
A 1930's bike messenger wins the big 6-day race. A hard to find B/W film from the 40's. Lots of 6-day footage, starring era comedian, Joe E. Brown. A personal favorite of mine, 'cos I knew Freddie Schultz, who was one of the standout riders in the film, and have recordings of the tales he told me of his years as a Six-Day Rider and the making of the film. Riders in the film were supplied with premium tubular tires, handmade by Mrs. Pye in her New Jersey basement. Whenever they got a puncture, they were given new tires. Some of the riders helped the process along by secreting straight pins in their jerseys, deliberately puncturing their tires in the aftermath of frequent falls on the board track. Fred also gave me the little Motobecane U-frame Folder I restored for my father. I was proud to find and give his daughter a copy of the film, which she watched with Fred before his passing. See: http://www.6dayracing.ca/riders/schultzf/schultzf-bio.html Fred, you were a legend, and I miss you!
The Triplets of Belleville (animated, 2003, French)
Thinly veiled homage to cycling great Fausto Coppi; determined grandmother tries to rescue her cyclist grandson after his kidnapping at the Tour de France.
20 Shades of Pink (1976)
A middle-aged house painter, goes through mid-life crisis and takes up cycling for exercise, meeting an attractive young bike racer. The painter thinks she is interested in him on a personal level when she really only wants to help him prepare for an age-group bike race.

Hi Dan
I'm going to stretch the topic slightly to include a short video. I think this is beautiful: Proem- When frailty fails.

Oh! What a nice and welcome addition, Ian; well done! It is stunning in its simplistic beautify and purity of line and form. It is hard to believe so many Big and emotional concepts can be captured and portrayed so minimally.
I think it's a great idea to include YouTube and Vimeo videos in this category, as well.
Best,
Dan.

Dear Dan,
It went by the title "Belleville Rendezvous" in the UK. A work of gently unsettling genius.
Yours, James
-
Boy!
That was 7:36 of my life well-spent! :D Just look at that technique...dropping the inside knee to lower the center-of-gravity, and clipping those apexes with razor precision. Darned motorcycles; geddouddadaway! Team cars, too! Scoot! Comin' through at warp speed...
Wow.
Humbles a person just to see that, doesn't it? It is a real pleasure seeing an accomplished person performing at the absolute top of their game.
Best,
Dan.

this is a great thread clever stuff dan well done...
one of my all time favourates is when steven roach chased down delgardo in the 87 tour he hit over 70mph on that decent ah if only i knew how to dig up tv footage of that 87 tour magic.

James, thanks so much for the update on the localized title. This happens surprisingly often, and I may have missed some more. I've edited the original post with a second entry so people will be able to catch it either way. Sharp eyes and most welcome; thanks!
Best,
Dan.

...one of my all time favourates is when steven roach chased down delgardo in the 87 tour...
Oh! I remember that, jags! Epic. Man, couldn't Roche ride? I don't think I found footage of the downhill, but I did find Roche/Delgado's duel to the uphill finish here (1987, at La Plagne):
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sQojh-wqL04 ...and a great interview here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A8Wj6P2hyic
There are links to the major stage events for the 1987 Tour here: http://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLE8A1A8EDD8B17AAB&feature=plcp
It is possible the scene you recall is among these. It would be great to see it again. As I said, Epic!

Hi Rual
the production values on Asiemut are amazingly high. It looks like the BBC made it. No wonder their bikes look so heavy with all that gear :)
Thanks

Hi All,
Here's a look at professional bike racing of a different sort...Japan's Keirin circuit. As one of the participants says, it is not so much about sport per se, but is the equivalent of pari-mutuel betting on the horse- or dog-racing circuits. Big money is involved, and it is a blood sport with absolutely horrendous crashes. Components are specifically registered and approved for Keirin use by the Nihon Jitensha Shink?kai (Japanese Bicycle Association or NJS), and are made to the highest standards for reliability and standardized to minimize any competitive advantage, since so much money is at stake. More about it all here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Keirin
And now the film...
NOWNESS.com presents: Keirin Bike Racing Film by Jonathan de Villiers
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ev7yrfhKf28
For those interested in NJS/Keirin-apprived components, they're available from a number of online vendors, including this one: http://tracksupermarket.com/ It is worth noting Campagnolo's Record Pista group didn't make the cut for Keirin, but the later Keirin Pista group did in 1991 (see: http://www.campyonly.com/images/catalogs/1991/91recordpista.jpg ).
Best,
Dan.

Yes it is a very well made film and the cinematography is superb in the amazing landscapes they rode through. I saw it in the local arthouse cinema when they had a tibetan themed festival showing. It was a digital projection, and looked great on the big screen.
-
Hi Dan
I never realised Japanese Keirin riders wore body armour. It looks more like Rollerball insofar as it looks to be a racing cert that someone will crash.
Brave guys!
This has been an entertaining and enlightening thread. Are any of the films you listed at the outset available online?
TYhanks
Ian.
-
I loved "Triplets of Belleville" (absolutely hilarious depiction of the stereotypes of the US as seen by non-Americans) and "Breaking Away".
The whole keirin world I stay away from and find very offensive. Keirin is sponsored by and the ugly world of the keirin racers is created by the Yakuza, who cause great damage in Japan and the world, traffic in white slavery, and are increasingly involved with major crime around the world. I want them obliterated and erased from Japanese society and will not support in any way anything to do with them. Sorry for voicing this strong opinion, but we've enough awful things in the world.
While not strictly movies, have any of you seen the BBC documentary series, "Fat Man On a Bicycle", featuring Tom Vernon, an author/ reporter who travels around Europe on his bicycle looking at history and local culture?
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=41t23WGvEUM (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=41t23WGvEUM)
I've always wondered what happened to him.
-
Are any of the films you listed at the outset available online?
Hi Ian,
A great question! The answer is "yes", but for a number of reasons, I decided not to post direct links to them. Why?
Well...
The Thorn list is international in scope, and enforcement of copyright law varies by locality. Also, a number of the sites streaming the films are pretty sketchy, and I didn't want to lure viewers to sites hosting malware. Not a problem for me with virtualized machines, but that is not the case for everyone.
One really is on one's own when looking to view or stream free movies online. And yes, I realize streaming or viewing movies online is not the same as a torrent-download, but things get murky quickly in that regard as well.
The best course is to see if any of the films are currently hosted by YouTube or Vimeo. Just enter the title in the search box on each site. Hulu -- if available in your part of the world -- also hosts films, and some are available without fees. If your ISP is also your pay-TV provider, they frequently offer movies for free online through their portal.
Most of the films are available through inter-library loan. If your local library doesn't have them, they can put in a request to any other library in their system, and it will be transferred over on a temporary basis, usually without charge.
Here in the States, we have online movie rentals available through Netflix, and the films can be delivered via post or download, for a fee. Something similar may be available for you.
If you don't have luck with the above methods, I do have some suggestions:
- In your favorite search engine, enter the string, "watch <title> online free", with no < > and no quotes.
- In your favorite search engine, enter the string, "<title> streaming video", with no < > and no quotes.
Minor variations on this theme will get you where you wish to go, but use some real caution; many of the sites that will come up are not ideal.
Finally, Amazon.com and eBay have a number of the titles available for very little cost. I do see site like movieberry.com have titles like Six-Day Bike Rider available for download for as little as USD$0.87. See: http://movieberry.com/6_day_bike_rider/
I wish I could be more specific, but I haven't been able to think of suitable free online viewing solutions beyond YouTube and Vimeo. I'm surely open to suggestions!
Best,
Dan.

Hi All,
Given our Thorns are now made in Taiwan, it is interesting to see the "other Taiwan" -- its countryside and mountains -- through the eyes of freerider Richie Schley in this video:

Gorgeous countryside.

Danny MacAskill - "Way Back Home", used the you tube clip in a year 9 assembly to promote the idea of cycling to school rather then being delivered to the door in a 7 seat people carrier, as a minor contribution to ensuring that they inherit a habitable planet. We were picking jaws off the floor along with the chairs. They're still being driven to school and childhood obesity, however..

Yes, James, it is a lovely piece of cinematography as well as some incredible riding.
They're still being driven to school and childhood obesity, however..
But you tried, and that's the thing. Kids don't exercise, and then people wonder where the obesity problem came from. I mourn the loss of kids walking to school or riding bikes in my area (Pacific NW, US). It was so common as to be the norm when I was a kid, now it just doesn't happen. The bike racks out in front of schools are empty as last year's bird nests, and you never see kids riding. Unfortunately, I'm not a parent and so don't know firsthand, but here it seems to be the result of a) parental fears of abduction or molestation, and b) the ever-growing number of off-site after-school activities that require speedy point-to-point transport over distances greater than kids are able to ride in the time available. I think there is a c) in there as well, which concerns distracted drivers running over the kids or creating unsafe riding conditions. Judging by what I saw as I pedaled past a school at bell-time yesterday, the biggest concern is likely to be other parents hauling their own little darlings at warp speed to their activities, and seeing bicyclists as impediments equal to speed bumps.
Whew. Where'd that come from? Must've been rattling around inside me for awhile!
Good recommendation for a film, James, and most welcome and appreciated. And good on ya for trying to make a difference. I'm guessing you lit a few candles' worth of interest in those young minds, even if circumstance prevented much discernible change.
Best,
Dan.

Hi All,
We are cycling around the world. This video sums up the first half of our 3 years adventure cycling around the globe, in 2010 and 2011. We covered extreme climates of the world, thanks to the power of a bike and also to all the people that helped us on the way. You don’t need much to achieve your dream of travel, and that’s what we to show in our project and in this video too.
That's the introduction to Solidream, a world-touring film series with startlingly good cinematography:

Here's a 1945 documentary by Raleigh, showing how they mass-produced bicycles back in the day:
How a Bicycle is Made
http://vimeo.com/39401575
This was long before the Tube Investments (TI) era, but shows how the workaday line was constructed. Lots of pressings for the BB and lugs, and not an investment cast part in sight. The hand-lining (coachlining) process is very interesting, and uses a roller as was common in mass painting. The coach lines on my 1980 Centurion ProTour were made by older ladies drawing paint-filled, long-bristled, bamboo-handled horsehair brushes along the painted tubes (I have photos from older brochures). Same result, but a different method suited only to more limited production.
Of course, this documentary is in black-and-white, as was the world, before the invention of color film. ;) I found proof of this in my father's old photo albums, where the black-and-white world was captured perfectly in every photo. Kodachrome and Agfa made the world a much brighter place... ;D Further proof here: http://www.reoiv.com/images/random/dadbandwandcolour.jpg

Thanks Dan, for another great find. I love this industrial heritage material. Old fashioned health and safety at work too: hands dipped in enamel baths, polishing without respiratory protection, frame dippers inhaling all the fumes etc. Good old days?
The "all steel bicycle" of old no less. Isn't it strange though that they could seam weld the frame tubes but then had to braze the joints.
Best wishes

Hi All!
Graeme Obree is back, this time building another radical bicycle for an attempt on the bicycle world speed record.
As described on the Humans Invent site...In early February 2012 Humans Invent visited the ‘Flying Scotsman’ Graeme Obree at his home in Saltcoats, Scotland. The 46-year old maverick was embarking on hand-building a bicycle in his kitchen capable of breaking the human powered land speed record this September in America. A man with a history of being marginalised for his innovation, Obree had returned to once again challenge conventional engineering and bike design by using his unique investigative mind to create a blueprint for a hand-built bicycle that could reach speeds up to 100 mph.
A fascinating look into Mr. Obree's latest design and thought process and a peek at how his work has progressed:

...or a preview of the TinyURL to show it is a legitimate redirect...

A transcribed interview is included at the above link, with drawings and details of the bicycle.

Yikes! :o
Here is a trailer for Lucas Brunelle's decade-old film project, Line of Sight, a documentary showing the life of bike messengers and alleycat racers in 30 cities in 20 countries: http://vimeo.com/43954522
The video is amazing, especially considering it was started before the advent of readily available POV cameras like the Contour and GoPro Hero. The footage is astonishing and more than a little disturbing as the riders take chances well beyond the bounds of safety or common sense ("Don't try this at home") and endanger others in their pursuits (including an apparent collision with a child at one point in the trailer). Still, the level of bike handling skills is off the charts. Worth a look but bound to be controversial. I've never seen a near-doornailing portrayed so accurately (I've just missed a few of those myself when riding responsibly and to the right as US traffic laws require. I've learned to distinguish between headrests and heads on instinct, but the worst is the parked driver who reaches for something on the floor of the car, then pops up like a jack-in-the box and flings his door open to the stops in one smooth motion -- right in front of me).
Best,
Dan.

That's a pretty comprehensive list to my mind Danneaux - coincidentally watched Breaking Away for the first time since its release in 1979 - it's aged quite well as a movie and remains an enjoyable viewing experience.
-
Hi Fred!
Surely nice to have you back on-board. Yes, Breaking Away has remained remarkably fresh despite more years than I care to remember since its release. Of course, the actors all stay fresh and young on celluloid (now aluminized polycarbonate disc).
I think the key to any film's staying power is a good story. Get that right with reasonable acting and production values, and it will remain entertaining for awhile.
Has anyone yet seen Premium Rush? Released here in the States last January (2012), the story centers on Manhattan bike messengers. I have yet to see it, but it sounds like one of those bicycle films that would be either a real hit or a complete flop; not many seem to hit that satisfying middle-ground. Here is a review, but it may contain spoilers, so don't read if you wish the show to remain a mystery beyond what I've just said: http://rogerebert.suntimes.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20120822/REVIEWS/120829996

Has anyone yet seen Premium Rush?
Just saw it this evening. Fun enough. A decent story. They jump around in time but display the time in big numerals for each part so it is not at all disorienting. It is pretty much bicycles racing through traffic the whole time. But there is enough plot to motivate the uptown/downtown action. I was just bicycling about a month ago in Manhattan so that added to the visceral fel for me!
Our hero rides a fixie - he skids the bike through curves in places, just freezing his feet and thus the back wheel. I've never ridden a fixie - I wouldn't have thought that possible! At one point he's racing another mike messenger through Central Park, up and down some gentle hills. The other guy has a rear derailleur & we get to see him shift down and up to manage the hill. So some decent bike details.
It's a pretty straight-forward movie - no real ambiguity about who the good and bad guys are. Looked like a very real police station. Some nice bike messenger culture. Lots and lots of Manhattan street scenes. Not a deep movie. But a fun action movie with a lot of bike riding!

Hi All!
Graeme Obree is back, and a test-ride of his latest creation is subject of a very short new "first-look" mini-docu on Vimeo here:
http://vimeo.com/45034602
This time, he's going for an IHPVA land-speed record in the US later this year, hoping to break 100mph. That's a lot of speed, but given his past efforts, I have little doubt he'll either get it outright or make a serious dent in it. I see the mounts for a fairing of some sort. Backstory and video with links to more here: http://www.bikeradar.com/road/news/article/video-graeme-obree-on-his-landspeed-record-bid-33525/
It took me the longest time to work out the treadle-drive system (genius in itself), but seeing it in action is something else.
I especially liked Mr. Obree's answer to the question of how it feels: "Oh, it feels great...soon as you get it powered up you can feel the power goes ergggggghhhhh!...Oh, that's better! Much better!"
Whenever I see Mr. Obree and his efforts, I am reminded that true genius is a burden and a lonely pursuit all at once; both require great courage. I wish him the best in achieving his goals.
Best,
Dan.

I think within the cycling community Obree is the person that most represents dedication. Reading Chris Hoy's book on his first 3 golds makes note of meeting up with Obree and being over awed by his sheer level of mental dedication he puts into everything he does.
High praise from another cycling legend

I recently came across some...amazing...videos on YouTube that left me temporarily speechless -- Martyn Ashton, using a carbon road bike for trials riding.
As the description says...
Martyn Ashton takes the £10k carbon road bike used by Team Sky's Bradley Wiggins & Mark Cavendish for a ride with a difference. With a plan to push the limits of road biking as far as his lycra legs would dare, Martyn looked to get his ultimate ride out of the awesome Pinarello Dogma 2. This bike won the 2012 Tour de France
This is some incredible stuff on a bicycle not purpose-built for it, and left me wondering if the same bike was used from take to take, or if it required dozens to make each video. No matter, this sort of riding is the province of a special few.
Lean back, click PLAY, and be prepared to lose a few minutes as these stream past.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7ZmJtYaUTa0
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5z1fSpZNXhU
Note: The disclaimer on the first video says, "Warning. Some of the following scenes should not be attempted". Perhaps that should include wiping-down one's bike with a lubricant? OTOH, perhaps it provides protection from the sea water shown in the second video....
Jags! You sold your Look XK road bike just a little too soon!
Best,
Dan.
-
AHH just posted this video on general ;D ;D
-
Well, jags, it's impressive enough to post twice! Man, that's some riding. I might have expected it of such a talented rider on a trials bike...but on a carbon roadie? Goodness!
Best,
Dan.

Hi all
I just found this on you tube. Ian Hibell shows off his touring kit on Blue Peter in1975.

Hi All!
I have a copy of Ian's "cycling biography", Into the Remote Places. The man was truly an original in the best of ways, and I think his achievements are amazing. I recall reading that to save weight, he took three socks...wearing two while the third was drying from washing. He took shoe polish to keep his cleated cycling shoes in good shape, and used it religiously.
Those wishing to learn a bit more about Ian can do so at the following links...
A nice page about Ian by the "Bike Brothers", Nicholas and Andrew Henderson, can be found here:
http://www.bikebrothers.co.uk/ianhibell.htm
Details about some of his bicycles appears here, with photos:
http://www.bikebrothers.co.uk/ih_touringbikes.htm
A new and comprehensive book about him, The Legend of Ian Hibell, is available here:
http://www.bikebrothers.co.uk/ian_legend.htm
The "Bike Brothers" home page is here: http://www.bikebrothers.co.uk/index.html
All the best,
Dan.

Incidentalliy, Into the Remote Places was reprinted recently by Mercian Manuals and is still available from them via Amazon, they also print a few other books about cyling legends as well as their main focus which is old car and motorbike books.

Hi Pete, glad you liked this. It took me back to my childhood as well as being a bike thing.
Dan, what can I say? Your ability to retort with the directly relevant and the tangentially interesting continues to amaze. Thank you so much.
Ian :)

EH what was that you said Ian ::) ;D ;D ;D

Hi All!
Ever wonder how racks are fillet-brazed? How handlebars and such are made? And then heat-treated in post-producton? Take a look at this video showing the inside workings of Nitto:
http://vimeo.com/23907384#
I was astonished at just how quickly drop 'bars are bent...and equally astounded at the mechanical precision of the gentleman carefully placing quill stems in formation on the tabletop after inserting the clamp bolt.
Best,
Dan.

"Brooks England -- The Blues of an Icon" is a documentary of operations at Brooks that recently came to my attention thanks to David Davies, Forum member and curator of the Tandem Pilots & Stokers group on Facebook.
A very nicely done portrayal of things Brooksian, it is viewable here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J4n8qkwIElY
I loved the retro-Roadie intro (in authentic recreation) and the saddle riveting caught my eye. As someone who has re-riveted many Brooks covers, I was um, "riveted" to the screen. They're right -- one misplaced hammer blow and the cover is ruined, bruised beyond redemption. Get it right, and the results are sublime. I cheat, using one free hammer to hit another (with softened striking surface) already placed on the rivet. The hard part is constructing a reliable anvil.
A must-see for all Brooks fans, laden with history and inside views of Operations. I think I could look at the rail-former all day, and especially liked the sign by the trimmer's station:
Qualification for Being a Trimmer:
Grip like a vice
Strength of a "800lb" Gorilla
Stamina of a Viking Rower
Best,
Dan.

Well time for me to post this Film about "Tour d'Afrique" 2012!

Enjoyed that thanks Pete,
I was an avid follower of your African trip, so much so it has inspired me to follow in your footsteps.
Checking your gear on your website was what directed me to Thorn and this website...
Of course that means if anything bad happens, its your fault.... :p

Well time for me to post this Film about "Tour d'Afrique" 2012...
Oh -- How disappointing! Content-blocked in the States, Germany, Asia, according to the message I receive when using various proxies and DNS'. This video contains content from SME, UMG, IODA, The Harry Fox Agency, Inc. (HFA), Beggars, UMPG Publishing, The Orchard Music and EMI, one or more of whom have blocked it in your country on copyright grounds.
I think it is the music publishers that did it.
Ah, me. Will keep trying, Pete.

Yes! It surely did, Pete, and good on you for finding it; much appreciated! It gave a much fuller appreciation for the entire event and...
...what you went through as well. Was that you in the Fallen Heroes section, in a hospital bed, wearing a helmet and giving the thumbs-up and victory signs? If so (and I hardly recognized you), the toll it took shows plainly. Very fortunate indeed to still have you with us, my friend. My goodness, you went through the mill on this one, yes indeed.
A very nice portrayal of Tour d'Afrique; a real treat to see, and well worth your effort to find a viewable version for me; thanks Pete!
All the best,
Dan. (...who sure hopes you can get the re-do of your hopes and dreams -- and wishing you a belated Happy ReBirthday)

One of the guys that runs Tour d'Afrique came to speak at our cycle club meeting and showed a full 1hr 15 video of the tour. It was brilliant, an exceptionally well-made video that showed the huge range of experiences that all the riders faced. The scenery, the people, the harsh riding on really tough roads, the huge contrasts in lifestyles and experiences were wonderful to see. One of the best travel presentations we've had at our club in the 20 years I have been a member.
Made me want to consider doing such a tour. But the 120kms per day average is not how I'd want to travel through Africa. I value my freedom to travel hard or stop and 'smell the roses' as I wish.
[edit] Kenya photos?? In the video we were shown they over-flew Kenya, from Ethiopia to Tanzania, due to the political turmoil and riots in the country. I was sure he showed us the 2012 ride ???

Hi Dan,
Today at my new part time job :o I started thinking that I may have seen it on Vimeo? So on coming home I just looked it up and find it ;) .
How was that you in the Fallen Heroes section, Yes!
In a hospital bed? No!
I'm the 1st of the Fallen Heroes (?) it was a long way to go for a short (2000km) ride :-\ .
New part time job 8) working one day on weekends at LBS :-*
Still working long hours driving a water truck (Offroad watering down the tracks and work sites) on week days until job is finish maybe weeks?

Hi TDA looks good up front and on Website :-\
BUT they just miss out on one thing ??? Not Being Professional :(
Because once I got ill they just got me onto the Flying Doctors (that was good) and then No phone calls to me? No email asking if I was OK! or sorry to hear that I was ill? just cut off, No support?
Yes you are right about 130+ km's per day, You miss out on loads of Africa as you race/ride past (and I only ride a small part of the trip) this is why I build up Tom (my Nomad) to go back and solo cycle tour ;)

My! What a terrific find, Rual; very kind of you to share this video of Patrick Plaine with us. I understand the video was made by his niece Anne Plaine Sophie and her friend Murielle Lourenço who accompanied and filmed him for a few days in 2010.
Very sadly, Patrick Plaine is no longer with us. After riding a lifetime distance of 1.7 million kilometers (1.056 milion miles) unassisted and solo, he perished in a road accident while on the bike. He was killed under the wheels of an agricultural machine (backhoe tractor) on 27 November 2012 while still riding his bike at age 70 -- just 10km from home. He never married and had no children, and had only meager finances after retiring early -- yet still accumulated about 40,000km/year. Plaine was primarily a randonneur (translates as "hiker") and raid rider who organized a number of epic routes (patents) for other randonneurs to ride. He was a cycling disciple of Velocio (Paul De Vivie): http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Paul_de_Vivie ...and...http://cycling.ahands.org/bicycling/velocio.html
Profile and tributes to Patrick Plaine here in French: http://tignon.andre.free.fr/report.php?id=1480

Online version of a newspaper story on his fatal accident translated here: See: http://www.sudouest.fr/2012/11/27/bussac-foret-17-mort-sous-les-roues-d-un-engin-agricole-891883-1277.php Translated, the account reads...Bussac-Forêt (17) death under the wheels of an agricultural machine
A cyclist died Tuesday 70years under the wheels of an agricultural machine forestry
The accident occurred shortly before 4:30 p.m. on Tuesday on the RD145 to Bussac-Forêt, in a long straight line, close to the detention center. A retired 70 years, residing in Montendre riding his bike when he was hit by an agricultural machine forestry, equipped with an articulated arm and shovel at the front. The exact circumstances, we only know that the driver did not see the cyclist who was hit in the head before falling and being caught under the wheels of the vehicle. The driver suffered a screening was negative for alcohol.
An investigation was opened by the police Montendre while the bicycle and the agricultural machine were seized by the prosecution for a number of checks.
The identity of the victim has not been revealed.
Best,
Dan.

Hi All!
I happened to pass by the bulletin board in the local Fred Meyer (an Oregon-based one-stop grocery, clothing, furnishings and home store) yesterday and a flyer caught my eye (it had bicycles on it; of course it caught my eye...), advertising an airing of Within Reach, a documentary on one couple's bicycle journey across the US in search of the "perfect" sustainable community for their needs. The trailer and more information about their journey is online here: http://withinreachmovie.com/home.shtml
Sustainable communities are the dream lifestyle for some people, and are probably the ultimate expression of a Utopian "live locally" commons/communal lifestyle.
In the late 1960s/early 1970s, my part of Oregon was at the heart of the larger "Back to the Earth" movement on the West Coast, and a number of communes were established. These went largely by the wayside at the end of the '70s, but I see a "deliberate effort at communal living" is about to be sited within a mile of my home, and a number of sustainable communities are already (re)established well within a day's cycle ride of where I live, according to this movie's website. It will be interesting to see how it all shakes out. In the past, such noble efforts have fallen victim to free-ridership, defections resulting in the tragedy of the Commons ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tragedy_of_the_commons ), and a vague sort of ennui before collapsing. At the other extreme, Oregon has seen what can occur when such visions become twisted and develop into something like Rajneeshpuram ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rajneeshpuram ), so I remain wary of such efforts even as they hold a bit of appeal.
I seem to be too independent for such a lifestyle, but the trailer looks interesting and involves cycling.
Best,
Dan.

Back in the day, I knew guys on already-fast 250 cc motorcycles who used to draft Greyhounds (the buses, not the dogs) to save gas -- they'd get 120 mpg at 65 - 70 mph, as those measures were in those days. They'd just tick in behind the bus, a yard or two back of the bumper, away from the exhaust. Don't know any of them now ...
Pete, do people queue in NZ to enter the annual Darwin awards?

Hi All!
Phil White of Cervélo explains how carbon fiber goes into making one of "those" frames, from the importance of directionality and layup to the differences that result from stiffness versus strength.

Thorns use steel, but on occasion, someone will fit a carbon fork, and it is interesting to see what goes into the science and mechanics behind it.

Hi Pete!
I spent the day on a bike running errands and chasing parts to make the special tool I need to do some maintenance work on the car, and so spent a lot of time between two towns on the bike lanes of Eugene and Springfield, Oregon. For fun, I took the 43 year-old Raleigh Gran Sports that looks like the photographic positive to the Nomad's negative -- it is all white with silver components compared to the Nomad's black-on-black Batman color scheme. Triple Stronglight 99bis drilled chainrings and the only accessories a Silca Impero pump with Campy steel head, tiny underseat bag, Bluemel's Popular mudgards and a Blackburn FastRack (like a Tubus Fly in alu rod) and a basic computer, which I left home. Oh! And a T/A Ergal alloy bottle cage. The tires were 27" Avocet Duros. Didn't dare park the Nomad and leave it where I needed to go; it -- or substantial pieces of it -- wouldn't have been there on my return. A shame, really.
Boy! It's much better here than in NYC and many other places, but it also requires some real vigilance while riding the on-street bike lanes. Lots of broken glass today,a nd some metal bits from collisions. Strange routings, too. For example, when I got into Springfield on Centennial Boulevard, the bike lane kept disappearing to make way for a left-turn lane for oncoming traffic. Apparently, bike traffic was supposed to simply vanish at those points. Yesterday, coming over Chambers Street overpass on my way home from the steel supplier, I heard a crunch just a meter or so off my left hip; the car there had just been rear-ended by another, and the glass from the headlights hit the bike lane just behind me.
Since working at home, I no longer commute in rush-hour traffic as I once regularly did, and it was interesting being back in the mix. There is a sort of bike messenger hyper-vigilence that obtains, and it surely kept me alert. Usually, I'm in traffic only in transit-connects for my day rides out in the countryside or for tours, so it was like riding in the MixMaster today. Brought me back to my uni days when I used to side-draft buses (ride in their bow-wake) and so make each commute a time-trial of sorts. Whew.
Are conditions kinder when riding in Taupo proper?
Best,
Dan.
-
Hi All!
A wonderful look at the cobbles of Paris-Roubaix using a close-up view taken by high-speed camera here:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=3QSpuhIQg1A
My favorite part starts at 1:20 and runs to 2:18, where you can see the effects of the cobbles-induced vibration on musculature and drivetrain. If you've ever wondered how you got that "snakebite" pinch-caused flat tire, this will show the "why". Same for those chain-caused chips in the right chainstay.
Good stuff, almost poetic.
Best,
Dan.

I apologize if this is in the thread already, but its my favourite
I googled cycling Varanasi
If you've never been to India, this is what its really like. We've been there too but its not us,
but can oh so much relate.
It has everything, horn honking, cows and staring men.
Short and sweet. 120 seconds
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ElnMXSzIdvw (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ElnMXSzIdvw)
-
My, Fred, watching this video of Varanasi, I keep thinking...what about the folks who live there, and have to commute in such conditions every.single.day. There were so many very close calls in that two minute running time, and it never got better. I can't really imagine how the two riders managed to avoid getting separated in all of that. Very eye-opening and -- yes! -- fascinating as a tour location.
Thanks for the link!
Best,
Dan.
-
Thats the technique we also use in India, and other congested cities.
After making a plan and giving clear instructions, my wife would be in front, as it would be easier for me to watch her and keep up.
Being taller helps as I can see further.
Its a lot scarier as you see how close everything comes to the other person.
Saying that though, India as in other similar places, drivers tend to be more forgiving and have a rule of their own.
We both carry a compass and I tell to keep heading north with no turns no matter how big the intersection.
Gotta watch the rogue cows. They can be the wild card in the traffic.

Hi All!
To see why I value my low gears, go to the 22:00 mark of this video for proof Oregon is not all flat:
http://watch.opb.org/video/1328929107/
31% grades on portions of this paved ride, about what I encounter on my favorite logging roads here'bouts.
35 years ago, I mapped a similar ride for Eugene.

Thanks for that, Dan! I lived just west of Portland for 11 years. I used to walk a lot of those hills regularly. A few of the staircases showed up in the video. Extremely tough biking!

When it comes to steep roads, Baldwin St in Dunedin, NZ (http://youtu.be/KxWd8sklUlg) has the Guiness Book of Records entry as the steepest in the world - 35% I believe.

Steepest street, rather than road, I managed to cycle about two thirds of the way up before coming to a standstill.
Really hard to keep the front wheel on the ground unless you put a lot of weight on the bars, and if you do that you lose traction at the rear wheel!
Interestingly, the surface is concrete rather than tarmac like all the other streets in the area, either because tarmac would gradually flow downhill on that gradient or for better grip in icy conditions?
-
There is a bike parked outside that house ... maybe you could ask his or her technique in reaching home each day! Some climb to end your cycle run! :o

Thanks, another enjoyable evening. Like you I'd rather watch these than the TV.
It is possible to watch these on TV if you...
1) Have a "Smart" (Internet-enabled) television
...or...
2) Have a plug-in gadget to make your present television Internet-enabled. These can be standalone units (Chromecast, Amazon FireTV, Roku, or AppleTV and others), or integrated with peripherals, like Blu-Ray players. Most of these gadgets will upscale, so even videos uploaded to YouTube in lower resolution will look better in HD or UHD.
Viewing YouTube videos on television does make for a very "TV-like" experience compared to seeing them on a computer monitor or smartphone.
For those interested in cycle-touring videos, a rich resource is available on Vimeo, as described here:

This documentary is well worth a watch: Dead Man Cycling
http://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/b064k1q5/dead-man-cycling
It's only available on iplayer until 10pm Thursday 03/09/15
The BBC program description:
Gold medal-winning Paralympian David Smith has faced many struggles in his life and career. The professional karate champion, athlete, bobsleigh brakeman, rower and now cyclist faces the biggest battle - for his life.
David Smith was born with clubfoot and came close to having his feet amputated at birth. After spending his first three years learning to walk in special boots and plaster casts, a career in Olympic sport seemed doubtful. However, that was just a hurdle he needed to get over and it was not going to hold him back.
David from Aviemore in the Scottish Highlands, is nothing if not determined. Despite his disability, he has succeeded in following his sporting dream first representing the UK at karate, Scotland at athletics and the UK at bobsleigh before deciding that rowing offered him the best possible chance of living his dream of Paralympic stardom.
However, nine months before London, David was diagnosed with a rare tumour on his spinal column and battled to regain fitness after life threatening surgery. Determined to win gold again, this time in cycling in Rio, David received devastating news that the tumour had returned and another battle against the potentially lethal illness started.
Dead Man Cycling follows David over the 18 months before, during and after his second spinal surgery. It is an emotional story of David's sheer inner strength and utter determination as he fights to live and ultimately regain fitness.
Never known to do anything by halves, David sets himself the seemingly impossible goal of attempting to cycle one of the world's most notorious cycling climbs - Mont Ventoux. Not once, but three times in a day - all just six months post-surgery. But, will the Dead Man Cycling make it?
-
Posted about that one a month ago macspud.

To find it, try this:
1) Go to the top-level of the Forum, the page you see that displays all the boards when it first opens. [If you want to search a specific board, then do the following from within that board.]
2) Under your profile at the top-left of the screen, click on the word "SEARCH". This will bring up the Advanced Search. This will allow you to do a more specific search than the Search box in the upper-right corner, which is the "simple search" option.
3) In the "SEARCH FOR" box, enter either "YouTube" or "Vimeo" (no quotes, try it first with one, then the other). In the "BY USER" box, enter "Jags" (no quotes).
The results will bring up all the YouTube and Vimeo videos you have linked to in all your Forum posts to date. Just go down the list, and it it should be in there unless the video was hosted somewhere other than YouTube or Vimeo.
All the best,
Dan.

Anyone roasted a whole chicken on a Trangia burner?
The producer of the Firebox stove range does a good job in this video using a trangia burner inside his Firebox Nano stove and a Zebra billy pot as a camp oven. He has other videos baking bread etc using the same oven concept.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WBQqOL7Ohyc
-
I do like that little table he has. I'm not sure I'd cook a chicken whole; far better to cut it into smaller pieces and personally I'd forget all about the salt brine etc. A litttle rapeseed oil and some cajun/jamaica jerk seasoning would suit me fine. Sure presses my hunger button regardless.

I have a friend and colleague by the same name in Halifax, wonderful man, & he rides a bike too, but he's not the SK. I asked him once if he was related and to his credit he knew about his namesake, and admitted that it was all just a coincidence.
(That sort of thing happens, y'know: My maternal grandfather's name was Robert Burns. Hearing that, people sometimes say, "The Robert Burns?" To which I say, "Well, far as I'm concerned, he was the Robert Burns.")

Thanks for this, Rual -- you're such a good source for the vids!
The opening moment called to mind a conversation I had some months back: I was visiting a friend who's shut in with a serious case of Parkinsons. He's in his mid-late 70's, and not long ago was very active. (He was a keen motorcyclist, rebuilding Indian V-twins.) I was leaving his flat, a bit subdued, and stepped into the lift with my cycling helmet under my arm.
I was greeted by a very trim and cheerful woman in (I'd guess) her early '80's. She looked at my kit and said, with a touch of BBC Southern in her accent, "Oh, you're cycling. Where are you going?" I said, "Just around the neighbourhood--I use the bike around the city, though I do longer journeys as well."
Then she said, "I don't ride these days, but I used to ride a lot. On the bike, it's like you're always on holiday." On the bike, it's like you're always on holiday. Jeez, I thought, I'll be happy to have her outlook on life in 12-15 years. I keep her words tucked away in my head, partly as a reminder of how fortunate we are to be able to ride these delightful machines.
Cheers, John

"Inspired to Ride" follows the riders of the inaugural TransAm Bike Race, from Astoria OR, USA to Yorktown VA. 4228mi
Two of the finishers were round the world record holders. One of them learned to ride a bike by cycling around the world!
There were also "normal" people in the race. And some who weren't really "racing". The 25th place finisher ( last one not to DNF ) took just over three months longer than the first place finisher.
I watched on Netflix but I'm sure it's available from several sources.
"The Man Who Cycled the World" is a BBC documentary about Mark Beaumont's record breaking ride in 2007-2008
Not sure if you can access it on BBC website ( can't in Canada ) but it's on YouTube, although it may take some digging to find a clip with sound, due to a copyright issue. (15 seconds of a Rolling Stones song at the very end of show)

An interesting cycling film is making its way across America at the moment, booked into select theaters only with on-demand screenings. This same model will have it showing also in Australia, New Zealand, UK, Ireland, Germany and Canada. It is expected to be available on DVD soonish.
Titled _Le Ride_, it chronicles a modern attempt to recreate the route (same roads and schedule but with air transport between legs) of the 1928 Tour de France using period bikes/recreations. Only 41 of 164 riders even finished that year due to the incredibly tough route.

While it is scheduled to show in my local theater, it appears to already be sold-out completely. Looking forward to either a streaming version, video-on-demand, or DVD release.
Best,
Dan.

Looks good Dan, it's due to be on at a cinema near me in November so I've been on and ordered tickets.

Delighted to hear that, Rual!
If you see it, would you mind sharing your general impressions afterwards? It looks like I may have to wait for the DVD release.
All the best,

Thanks for this, Anto. Sweaty bizness! Dodgy stuff sometimes, eh, between the autoroutes and the roundabouts? Sometimes 4-lane highways are the only ones available; still, I've never felt comfortable on on them on a bike, even on the wide shoulders. Too much aimless driving, along with a lot of trash on the shoulders.
-
No bother John .i'm thinking he could have taking better quieter roads way to much traffic for my liking.i know Dan would rather hit the back roads and cross some desert but then again he has indian blood in him no problem sleeping with the wild life ;D ;D.
still it's great to see how other guys travel by bicycle fair play to him epic tour.

We were at the local arthouse cinema tonight to see 'Mountain'.
Great documentary film about mountains, mountaineering, jumping off mountains, riding down mountains, extreme skiing, etc.
Fantastic cinematography and great music by the Australian Chamber Orchestra, with narration by William Defoe.
Limited cycling but some mountain biking, and riding off cliffs with parachutes!

This isn't a cycling film, but is worth a watch if interested in walking, the British countryside, a bit of geology, and bothies.
Bloke walks length of Britain and back, visiting all 123 (or so) bothies, putting up hooks to hang stuff up on.
The Scottish part is the best, naturally. ;D

Watched this 1949 movie at the weekend after a friend gave me the link.
“A boy, a girl and a bike.”
Real Nostalgia and shows the typical cycling club scene in Northern England back then. Plus fantastic Yorkshire Dales scenery even though in black and white. The absence of cars is amazing.
A young Honor Blackman, Diana Dors and very young Anthony Newley. The bikes are the real stars though!

This thread seems to have been lying dormant for a while, time to fire it up again with things to watch during 'lockdown'.
Good film from Brompton Traveller on youtube on his tour of the southern half of the Caraterra Austral in Chile.
Anyone who says Bromptons are not suitable for touring needs to have a watch of this.
500km on 'ripio' gravel roads.

We are not permitted to go out for a bike ride so I am using an exercise bike indoors. I am following Gianni's rides by putting my Samsung tablet on the exercise bike console and running his videos. His are particularly good for this because a high proportion of the time he is riding with a chest cam running so I'm cycling in his place. It passes an hour each day. I've also been with him through Pakisatan, Thailand and Morocco in the past week or so and the Canadian Rockies this morning. Good stuff. I'd recommend the Brompton Traveler too.

Thanks, Rual -- what a great choice: splendid film, remarkable landscapes.
As for "testing limits", my reckoning these days is a bit more prosaic: In about ten days, we've gone from a decidedly cool-and-late spring, with daytime highs around 4 or 5, to nearly mid-summer, with daytime highs in the low 30s, and the humidex in the mid-to-high 30s.
So, I'm looking verrry cautiously at a 3 1/2-hour there-and-back up into the Gatineau Hills across the river.
Cheers, John

Four adventure films including Eastbound for £9.70

Michael Cimino was a film director of lyrical genius, seen in such movies as Thunderbolt and Lightfoot, The Deer Hunter, and particularly in the financial failure, Heaven's Gate, now deservedly a cult film. As a teenager growing up in the country, I went to many weddings and barn dances as depicted in Heaven's Gate, and can thus testify to the authenticity of that extended scene.
Among Cimino's projects stalled in development were:
-- an adaptation of The Yellow Jersey by Ralph Hume, a novel about a bicycle marathon
-- a film set against the Tour de France which turned out to be impossible to shoot because of the close confines of the roads on which much of the race is held
They could have been such beautiful films...
-
+1 for "Heaven's Gate". (Don't recall a nod of thanks to Shakespeare, but I'll cut him some slack. ;))
