Well time for me to post this Film about "Tour d'Afrique" 2012!
This is the trip to Africa that I started last year (and almost ended Me   ) on the 3rd/4th of Feb this year was my 1st birthday! to be alive is great, to cycle is better  
You will see Me at the end of the Film.

One of the guys that runs Tour d'Afrique came to speak at our cycle club meeting and showed a full 1hr 15 video of the tour. It was brilliant, an exceptionally well-made video that showed the huge range of experiences that all the riders faced. The scenery,  the people, the harsh riding on really tough roads, the huge contrasts in lifestyles and experiences were wonderful to see. One of the best travel presentations we've had at our club in the 20 years I have been a member.

Made me want to consider doing such a tour. But the 120kms per day average is not how I'd want to travel through Africa. I value my freedom to travel hard or stop and 'smell the roses' as I wish.



[edit] Kenya photos?? In the video we were shown they over-flew Kenya, from Ethiopia to Tanzania, due to the political turmoil and riots in the country. I was sure he showed us the 2012 ride

Hi Dan,
Today at my new part time job    I started thinking that I may have seen it on Vimeo? So on coming home I just looked it up and find it  .
How was that you in the Fallen Heroes section, Yes!
In a hospital bed? No!
I'm the 1st of the Fallen Heroes (?) it was a long way to go for a short (2000km) ride  .
New part time job  working one day on weekends at LBS 
Still working long hours driving a water truck (Offroad watering down the tracks and work sites) on week days until job is finish maybe weeks?

BUT they just miss out on one thing  Not Being Professional 
Because once I got ill they just got me onto the Flying Doctors (that was good) and then No phone calls to me? No email asking if I was OK! or sorry to hear that I was ill? just cut off, No support?
Yes you are right about 130+ km's per day, You miss out on loads of Africa as you race/ride past (and I only ride a small part of the trip) this is why I build up Tom (my Nomad) to go back and solo cycle tour

Ha Ha Dan,

I was once driving a Tour Bus in Europe when there was a small odd noise  
I looked in Mirror's All OK, Looked at my Reverse Camera (had just been turning around) to see Three Rollerblader's well they hit the back of My Bus hard   After I Braked 

My Bus and I were all OK    and Yes the Rollerblader's were OK too just a little   Sorry

Passages were all Smiling

My! What a terrific find, Rual; very kind of you to share this video of Patrick Plaine with us. I understand the video was made by his niece Anne Plaine Sophie and her friend Murielle Lourenço who accompanied and filmed him for a few days in 2010.

Very sadly, Patrick Plaine is no longer with us. After riding a lifetime distance of 1.7 million kilometers (1.056 milion miles) unassisted and solo, he perished in a road accident while on the bike. He was killed under the wheels of an agricultural machine (backhoe tractor) on 27 November 2012 while still riding his bike at age 70 -- just 10km from home. He never married and had no children, and had only meager finances after retiring early -- yet still accumulated about 40,000km/year. Plaine was primarily a randonneur (translates as "hiker") and raid rider who organized a number of epic routes (patents) for other randonneurs to ride. A cyclist died Tuesday 70years under the wheels of an agricultural machine forestry

The accident occurred shortly before 4:30 p.m. on Tuesday on the RD145 to Bussac-Forêt, in a long straight line, close to the detention center. A retired 70 years, residing in Montendre riding his bike when he was hit by an agricultural machine forestry, equipped with an articulated arm and shovel at the front. The exact circumstances, we only know that the driver did not see the cyclist who was hit in the head before falling and being caught under the wheels of the vehicle. The driver suffered a screening was negative for alcohol.

An investigation was opened by the police Montendre while the bicycle and the agricultural machine were seized by the prosecution for a number of checks.

The identity of the victim has not been revealed.

Hi All!

I happened to pass by the bulletin board in the local Fred Meyer (an Oregon-based one-stop grocery, clothing, furnishings and home store) yesterday and a flyer caught my eye (it had bicycles on it; of course it caught my eye...), advertising an airing of Within Reach, a documentary on one couple's bicycle journey across the US in search of the "perfect" sustainable community for their needs. Sustainable communities are the dream lifestyle for some people, and are probably the ultimate expression of a Utopian "live locally" commons/communal lifestyle.

In the late 1960s/early 1970s, my part of Oregon was at the heart of the larger "Back to the Earth" movement on the West Coast, and a number of communes were established. These went largely by the wayside at the end of the '70s, but I see a "deliberate effort at communal living" is about to be sited within a mile of my home, and a number of sustainable communities are already (re)established well within a day's cycle ride of where I live, according to this movie's website. It will be interesting to see how it all shakes out. In the past, such noble efforts have fallen victim to free-ridership, defections resulting in the tragedy of the Commons ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tragedy_of_the_commons ), and a vague sort of ennui before collapsing. At the other extreme, Oregon has seen what can occur when such visions become twisted and develop into something like Rajneeshpuram ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rajneeshpuram ), so I remain wary of such efforts even as they hold a bit of appeal.

I seem to be too independent for such a lifestyle, but the trailer looks interesting and involves cycling.
