Hi All!

I have a copy of Ian's "cycling biography", Into the Remote Places. The man was truly an original in the best of ways, and I think his achievements are amazing. I recall reading that to save weight, he took three socks...wearing two while the third was drying from washing. He took shoe polish to keep his cleated cycling shoes in good shape, and used it religiously.

Incidentalliy, Into the Remote Places was reprinted recently by Mercian Manuals and is still available from them via Amazon, they also print a few other books about cyling legends as well as their main focus which is old car and motorbike books.

Hi All!

Ever wonder how racks are fillet-brazed? How handlebars and such are made? And then heat-treated in post-producton? Take a look at this video showing the inside workings of Nitto:

I was astonished at just how quickly drop 'bars are bent...and equally astounded at the mechanical precision of the gentleman carefully placing quill stems in formation on the tabletop after inserting the clamp bolt.

"Brooks England -- The Blues of an Icon" is a documentary of operations at Brooks that recently came to my attention thanks to David Davies, Forum member and curator of the Tandem Pilots & Stokers group on Facebook.

I loved the retro-Roadie intro (in authentic recreation) and the saddle riveting caught my eye. As someone who has re-riveted many Brooks covers, I was um, "riveted" to the screen. They're right -- one misplaced hammer blow and the cover is ruined, bruised beyond redemption. Get it right, and the results are sublime. I cheat, using one free hammer to hit another (with softened striking surface) already placed on the rivet. The hard part is constructing a reliable anvil.

A must-see for all Brooks fans, laden with history and inside views of Operations. I think I could look at the rail-former all day, and especially liked the sign by the trimmer's station:

Stamina of a Viking Rower

Yes! It surely did, Pete, and good on you for finding it; much appreciated! It gave a much fuller appreciation for the entire event and...

...what you went through as well. Was that you in the Fallen Heroes section, in a hospital bed, wearing a helmet and giving the thumbs-up and victory signs? If so (and I hardly recognized you), the toll it took shows plainly. Very fortunate indeed to still have you with us, my friend. My goodness, you went through the mill on this one, yes indeed.

A very nice portrayal of Tour d'Afrique; a real treat to see, and well worth your effort to find a viewable version for me; thanks Pete!
