Hi All!

I recently received an email from Oliver Römer, principal of Tout Terrain with Stephanie Römer. Oliver tells me Tout Terrain are spinning-off their accessory business under a new name, Cinq5.

Henceforth, Tout Terrain accessory products will be branded "Cinq5" and will center on the further development of existing products as well as new ones. Cinq5's offerings will contain updates to familiar products, which I will cover in separate posts in the Lighting and Electronics boards' Battery Charging from a Dynamo child board ( http://www.thorncycles.co.uk/forums/index.php?topic=7171.0 ).

However, the most exciting news for the Rohloff Board is the Cinq5 Shift:R Dual trigger shifter for Rohloff, intended to fit straight or drop handlebars. Here is what Tout Terrain/Cinq5 have to say about it:

Quote
It is what many Rohloff Speedhub riders have waited for: The thumb shifter.

The Shift:R combines the legendary durability of the Rohloff Speedhub 500/14 with shifting comfort of a modern derailleur drive train system. Now some unique technical innovations allow you to choose a new ergonomic option for Speedhub
equipped bikes.

» EasyShift: The simplified shifting logic with separate levers for low and high gears makes it easy to get used to
» Improved ergonomics: with the Shift:R you can now use full-size grips on both hands
» Flexibility: The Shift:R can be used on multiple bar types, e.g. drop bars or conventional flat bars
» Easy adjustment and fine tuning through the EAS system: cable tension can easily be adjusted right at the shifters
» Easy installation: due to the ORS technology (Optimized remount sequence) the gear position of the Shift:R and the Speedhub don’t require synchronization
» Using ICM (Inverse Cable Mount) technology an extremely compact shifting mechanism can be integrated in the Shift:R box
It appears from the product photo (attached below) a modified EX shift-box may be involved, but this is unclear to me at present.

I presume pressing one trigger shifter down would move the other up and vise versa, given the hub's push-pull shifting action.

I will post a MSRP and availability dates as soon as available.

The Cinq5 website isn't fully live at present, but is available here: http://www.cinq5.de/
The Cinq5 Blog is here (German): http://cinq-five.blogspot.de/

Dan.

Hi All!

In looking closely at the Cinq5 trigger shifters, I think it might be possible to place the triggers near the brake hoods on drop handlebars.

I'm not sure how weather sealing is handled at the point where the cables enter the housings; that remains a question for me at present.

Best,

Dan.

Thanks, Dan, for all this -- I noticed the weather-sealing question as well.  Surely designers based in N Europe have taken account of cold-wet-mucky?

Yes -- thanks, Dan. I guess they're showing this at Eurobike, so it popped up on my Twitter feed today also.

Here in Austin, weather sealing isn't a problem  ;D

If you are trying to set up near the hoods on drop bars, perhaps you need to fabricate a bracket on each side similar to the Kelley Take Offs.  If you are not sure what they are, do an internet search

Hi Dan any more on where to order from?

Anymore about how well they shift?

Looking great from Mountain Biking in the Mud! I have find that the new Rohloff shifter is not very good in the Mud (Too Round!) Old Rohloff shifter was far better in the Mud!

Pete Great to be working full time again and in a Cycle shop!  :-*

FYI, Rohloff announced a new shifter that should solve your problem (it is not only mud, but the same problem appear if you have wet hands from riding when raining, riding in hot conditions...):

The new part is only the plastic/rubber part (you keep the remaining parts of your old shifter), compared to the Tout Terrain solution is is very cheap, it will cost ony 16€.  All new Rohloff will be delivered with this new shifter.

Oh, nicely found and shared, Fleur; thanks!

This cover looks very promising, and the price is surely right. So nice to see Rohloff continue to develop and refine the Speedhub and related components.

Rohloff detail the replacement procedure in a video here: http://www.rohloff.de/en/technology/workshop/videos/twist_shifter_grip_replacement/index.html
The rubber grip can be replaced without having to remove the shifter cables.

Best,

Dan.
