I hadn't realised that there were 26" versions of the Mercury, I'd thought they were all 700c.

The vendor supplied the following additional information:

Serial number looks like K9 6091427. Top tube is 56cm, seat tube is 52cm.

Agree, think that must be a typo?

Doesn't seem a typo. 26' Mercuries were built in Bridgwater and the above seems to have been Kevin Sayles' work (K9 will probably turn out KS on closer inspection).

No problem. Now I dug up a photo of a 26' Mercury that was available some time ago on SJSC pre-owned section, I think this particular one was owned by Robin Thorn. Seems like a nippy bike.

The 26" Mercury was basicly a Kevin handbuilt Sport Tour which existed long before the current Mercury model, depending on the customers riding style and intended use they were often a shorter wheelbase than a standard RST and often had custom fittings and 9/10 had an elaborate paint job.

We did the frame swap for this customer not so long ago, I can assure anyone of its provenance and good condition.
