How do I adjust the cones / bearings on my rofloff ?
« on: September 04, 2014, 02:09:25 PM »
I have about 1 mm of side to side movement of the rim of my RST.
Can I adjust the bearings ?  Do I need any special tools ?

thanks in advance.

Sounds like you need to true the wheel (adjust the spokes), unless I'm misunderstanding the question.

When you say "movement", do you mean play?  ???

Yes, play.
Rim is pretty true.

If it were my bike, I'd take it in to Thorn (or another Rohloff service centre) to fix. I don't think it's as easy to fix as a 'normal' set of bearings.

If the free play is apparent between the hub shell and the axle then I think you will have worn hub shell bearings. See link for picture      http://www.bikestation.fi/shop/rohloff_hubs/speedhub_spares/rohloff_speedhub_hub_shell_bearings_2_pcs.

These are non adjustable cartridge type bearings, excessive play is fixed by having a specialist install new units. ( If you are asking this question you can't do it  :( ) It is not unheard of for these to wear out.

Is your hub still within the warranty period?  If so speak to Rohloff first as they are reputed to be very helpful.

Good luck

Thanks folks.
That link doesnt seem to work for me.
A bit disappointed that the cones / bearing shells / whatever may need doing after 15000km. I will talk to rohloff and/or thorn see what they say. Both are helpful.

Are you n the UK? I've just clicked on the link and it goes straight there  ???
15k does seem low for that sort of wear. Is it in a tandem?

The link works now. Dunno what the issue was. Tried it through office VPN (proxied via Ireland) and at home, neither worked y'day.

Anyway - its not a tandem.
Are those the main bearings for the hub ? Does this mean therefore there no cones which can be adjusted ?
Think I need to take a wee video showing the play and get in touch with rohloff.
<sigh>  another wee job

no cones and therefore no adjustment  :(

These are the main bearings the hub rolls on. The others inside support the internal moving parts and the sprocket.
