Thorn Raven Sport for sale
« on: July 23, 2014, 04:24:58 AM »
yes thinking of selling it. Im taking it for a service tomorrow at the London rohloff specialist, Bikefix near Holborn. It is black, Frame size 853, 26 inch wheels, marathon plus tyres, bike stand, rear bag rack. Will put photos up later after the service or contact me direct. I have no idea what the going price is for a 9/10 year old bike, that i paid 1300GBP for. I saw on here one went on ebay for 1200GBP. So not sure to put on there or see what price i get on here. Has anyone tried the thorn system where they sell it for you on ebay, after servicing it taking photos for 35quid etc but you have to send it to them by courier which can cost 80quid, so you may have to fork out 115 upfont. anyone had any luck with them?

I picked one up last year for a bit less that was only 3 years old.

Just try it out and see how it goes.
Pictures sell a bike.

Snigger. I'm the buyer. A fair price, we're both happy with the deal.
I'll be selling my Sherpa in a few weeks, done 3,500k, carbide rear rim, rear rack, new Thorn saddle, a few other bits. It'll be on ebay, with a return possible if not as described, and I'll deliver in the south east. If you're interested, size 585L, pm me.

After the purchase I rode the bike across northern Spain, it was great and never missed a beat - dead solid at 55kph downhill with a load, and I fell in love with the Rohloff - definitely the way to go. After some thought I've decided it is slightly too small for me and plan to go to Thorn and buy a new one with exactly my spec. So this will be for sale soon. I've had a brand new carbide-reinforced Andra rear rim put on it because I had one on the Sherpa and it's brilliant at stopping the bike. So watch this space.

(Anyone interested could PM me)

Finally got round to measuring the bike!
I cannot download the brochure from the historic archives section of the thorn forums so can't work out the proper sizing Thorn gave it.
This is what my tape measure tells me:
Actual seat tube 510mm
Virtual top tube 550mm
Mid tube stand over height 780mm
Height of top tube at head tube 830mm
There is a number stamped under the bottom bracket, it is 561 I think, it's a bit obscured by the paint thickness. That normally refers to the size of the bike which is normally the length of the seat tube and there Is usually an L or an M after that to suggest the length of the top tube. But in this bike that cannot be the case. Maybe thorn changed the sizing.
The distance from the front of the saddle to the middle of the handlebars is 540mm, obviously the stem can be changed for a longer or a shorter one. The Rohloff hub has the number 047723 on it. I understand the first two numbers refer to the year of manufacture.
I'm going to be talking to Thorn about a brand new one in my size. This has a riding position slightly too upright for me. I did think about putting on a longer stem and using a trailer to carry my camping kit in Patagonia but decided although it would work ok, it was a bit of a faff.
Hence selling the bike.
PM me if interested.

Seems that the 561 S is the closest fit.

Here's a screen grab of the RST size guide:

It has gone to Thorn for them to sell via eBay, so best to keep an eye out there if you're interested.
