Anyone interested in speedhub and cleaning oils (Rohloff)?
« on: February 16, 2014, 03:43:44 PM »
Hi Rohloff speedhub users,

Anyone interested in sharing the costs of ordering 1 litre of speedhub oil and 1 litre of cleaning oil?

Lets say 6 people sharing the costs (£16.7 per head, see links below), at 150 ml of speedhub oil and 150 ml of cleaning oil per head, which is enough for 10 oil changes (using 15 ml per change as recommended by Andy in the Thorn documentation and approved by Rohloff), would result in £1.70/oil change. A significant saving in comparison with buying the oil in the standard bottles of 25 ml (£12 a pair of speedhub and cleaning oil).

Anyone interested?, please, let me know.

PS. Maybe there is already a member of the forum that is selling oil at a good price, if so, please let me know as I am interested.

Cheers

Javier

You are forgetting to cost in the price of bottles and redistribution.

Does anyone know the shelf life of rohloff oil.  If you look on bike24 in Germany the oil is cheaper.

Peter.

I did a quick Google search for "Rohloff oil shelf life", and it came up with an existing thread on this forum:
   http://www.thorncycles.co.uk/forums/index.php?topic=1911.0

Short answer: shelf life is at least 5 years (according to SJS).

I'd be in on it.

The only issue I have is where to send it.
Am in Oz till March then the UK.

You'd also need to consider your postage.
Where/when would you be sending it from.

Had a look at a few sites and am only able to find the oil in 1 litre containers, but not the cleaning oil. Even Bike 24

I have just received a package of the Rohloff Oil and cleaning oil in 2x250ml containers, from Bike24. Much cheaper than buying the 25ml oil bottles.

Thanks for your feedback.

So far only "onrbikes" member is interested in sharing the cost of 1 l speedhub oil and 1 l cleaning oil. When I have another 4 people interested I will look at the logistic details (postage and small bottles) to let you know the final cost, that there is no doubt will be much cheaper than buying 25 ml bottles.

I will postage from the UK to the UK.

No intention to make any profit, I do it for the shake of the good cycling fraternity!

I would be interested in this. I assume you would be supplying in 150ml bottles, not lots of little ones. However by the time you  have bought the bottles there might not be much difference in the price from the 250ml ones that SJS already sell.

I bought the 250ml bottle set from bike 24 late last year and it's still listed as 'in stock' http://www.bike24.com/1.php?content=8;navigation=1;product=27597;page=1;menu=1000,185,190;mid=118

Grab it now before the Aus govt imposes GST on small imports!

Hey on my bike

It seems a standard price worldwide for the 250ml fluids.

Try cycle monkey from the states.
If we Australians could come up with a mini co-op, could buy the 1 litre oil/cleaner kit for $200 delivered, then split it.

$6 post for Australia plus $3 for the bottles plus $5 for the fluids
That would be about $14 for a 25ml oil change

But you need about 40 cyclists or own a shop to justify purchasing that amount.

Its all starting to sound too difficult.

Geez Fred, just buy your very own 250ml set... 45 Euro, less German VAT = 36ish Euro + 20 Euro shipping = 56 Euro = $86AUD. Divide by 10 = $8.60 AUD per 25ml oil change. Simply not worth the 1 litre bulk buy and redistribute hassle.

For those outside Australia (I'm guessing that's a couple of you), the shop asking price here for a 25ml change set is upwards of $30AUD!

Hey Syd

You're absolutely right. Too much hassle.
As we have two bikes would use up the 250ml a bit quicker.

It gets even worse, as cyclemonkey (USA) got back to me and actually charge $40 postage!
Whats the point.
I'll be in Europe this year so may buy a kit while there.

Maybe in the future we'll actually find out what the golden fluid is made of and buy it from Cheap Auto
