rediscovery of the delights!
« on: December 08, 2013, 03:54:41 PM »
Today after not turning a pedal for 4 months I went out and did 20odd miles (battery on the computer went flat) on the Thorn Raven Sport Tour ;D
Been on an MTB and dropped bars with occassional Brompton forays in the non-Thorn period, needless to say the joys of rohloff and mudguards are delightfully rediscovered.  May even change the oil soon!

Anyone else had a lay off and then rediscovered?
Dave

Even after a break of 4 weeks it feels magic especially with the wind behind me as today.

Just about 9 miles today for me, but that's a 1200 foot climb so it warms me up... despite a temperature of about 25F! It's coming back down that's really cold! Up at the top I added a fleece vest under my jacket and also my neoprene face mask. Mostly just my toes that are cold.

I did get inspired this morning... drove down with my sweetheart for breakfast with her son who is in college. On our drive back we passed a fellow all bundled up out riding. He had nice bright yellow gaiters on. His looked neoprene. I have some tough nylon gaiters, more for snow shoeing. But I thought, why not try them on the bike?! I think they did help keep me a bit warm.

Hi Dave!

Weather is forcing me off the bike at the moment, and I can't wait to get back to riding. I'm guessing it will be every bit as much fun as I remember.

It was -19°C/-2F° on its way to -21°C/-6°F when I went to bed last night and -12°C/9F° now (Noon). Still 18cm of powder snow on the ground with icy rain due Tuesday. Tried riding yesterday, but the snow stuck to the tires and soon blocked them up against the mudguards. I think things might have gone better if I'd left the bike in the garage for the tires to cool rather than taking it directly out of the house to ride. I brought back inside in stages (garage, mudroom, utility, house) to prevent condensation.

All should be well by Wednesday or Thursday -- after all, the weather forecasters have promised!  ::)

Best,

Dan.

We're having weird weather here in the South of Ireland. Through the day, if it is sunny, it is 3-4-5 Celcius. But get this: the nights cloud over and the heat gets locked in, boing boing between the earth and the clouds, and the temperature rises to 7-8-9 just after dawn, so I've taken some short rides in the early mornings. To Jim and Dan and the Scottish contingent 7-8-9 may sound like I live in Heaven, but to me anything under 13 degrees is COLD, so the rides are perforce short and chosen to have uphill slopes near the beginning and flat after that rather than the speedy steep downhills of summer.

we are easily 10 degrees right now, similar mild conditions here in the east of scotland, in the west its wet, on the 0630 dog walk I am alternating between the fleeced mountain jacket and the windproof rain jacket, such is the diverse temp range day to day.  At least Dan and Pete know where they are with the weather, we take what we get!

10 degrees here in Aberdeen UK.
Snow last week so haven't been out on the Raven for 6 days.
Can't wait for my usual 40 miler. Should start off in half an hour.
I definitely get withdrawal symptoms if away from the bike for more than 2 days.
Strange.

I got pitched off the Nomad on Feb 2nd this year - busted collarbone  :(

The first riding of any more than up the street that I did was after our flight from Australia, in Rome, and later along the Amalfi Coast. It was very good to get back on the bike, but still a bit challenging to go hauling bike and gear down and up the steps of the Italian rail subways.

Mild day here in Ireland, 10C. Went out, returned home soaking. Par for the course. At least not hot like in Brisbane...
