Good evening,

I just got my Supernova E3 Pro 2 with its multi mount to install in my Thorn Nomad, but when I unscrew the screw that come in the crown fork of my Thorn Nomad (bought early this year) I realize that the screw and hole is thinner than the long screw that comes with the Supernova multimount.

Has anybody install this light? How did you do it?

Which dimensions is the necessary screw for the Thorn Nomad, where could I get a screw that works, how should I measure the length of it as well?

Regards,
Pablo

Hi Pablo!

My Nomad Mk2 has a 5x0.8mm thread in the front of the fork crown. When I needed to mount my B&M Q Cyo R headlamp on a wire (rod steel) bracket from an IQ Fly, I simply used a longer 5mm bolt with a washer on each side of the wire bracket.

Looking at the Supernova Multimount on Peter White's site ( http://www.peterwhitecycles.com/supernova.asp ), he mentions it is intended for bikes with a 6mm hole threaded in the front of the crown and adds, "Most crowns do not have a 6mm x 1mm threaded hole in the front".

I would suggest you do something similar to my approach, using a longer 5mm bolt with a washer at the front, under the head. It will pass through the threaded 6mm hole in the Multimount without engaging the threads, but will hold nicely at the crown. An alternative might be to use one of the other mounts shown on Peter's site, but the 5mm bolt should work fine with a washer. I'm considering backing mine up with a  curved-back mounting washer from an older Weinmann or Diacompe caliper brakeset so the mounting bracket will have a square surface to seat on. That might be worthwhile for your Supernova, as well.

Hope this helps. Perhaps an E3 owner will be along with suggestions as well.

Best,

Dan.

Might be possible to find a bolt that is half 6mm, half 5mm? I have no idea about this kind of things to be fair but...

These would be awfully hard to find, Pablo, but a person could make one by turning down the diameter of part of a 6mm x 1.0 bolt and then rethreading it to 5mm x 0.8 using a die to cut the threads.

I don't think it would help, however, as the 6mm threads would bottom in the bracket and then you'd have to somehow spin the lot to screw it into the Nomad's fork crown, only to have it likely orient some angle other than vertical.

I think the route to go is a long 5mm bolt with washer(s). Alternatively, you could mount it to a Thorn bracket: http://www.sjscycles.co.uk/thorn-alloy-dynamo-headlamp-bracket-m5-fork-crown-mounting-black-prod12373/ I believe the 10mm spacing at the light end is the same as the Supernova (standard). It is designed to mount with a 5mm bolt, but unlike the Supernova is not adjustable for height, so you might have clearance problems between the top of the light and the underside of a handlebar bag.

All the best,

Dan.

I have an E3 Pro 2 front light and the multimount has a long 6mm bolt which fastens into a blind end 6mm threaded hole in the multimount base.
It is intended that you thread the bolt from the rear of the fork crown with the multimount base on the front of the fork crown.

It should be simple to drill the multimount base enough that the hole goes right through which then allows the use of a 5mm bolt, washer and fastened into a fork crown with a 5mm threaded hole. My multimount has clearance between the arms at the front for a 6mm socket head bolt.

Personally I prefer handlebar mounting with gold connector wiring, that way I can remove the light when leaving the bike unattended.
The E3 Pro 2 is a very good headlight, just a bit pricey to lose to a thief.
Julian.

Just slip a 5mm bolt inside the 6mm hole. It's what I did when I had the Supernova with the multimount on my Nomad.

Silly question... 5mm bolt is M5 bolt?

Yes.

The only silly question is the one left unasked.  ;D

I got it installed.

Now I just need to get rid of the long wire that goes to the tail light, since I don't have and I am not going to have a tail light.

Do you think there would be any warranty issue about cutting it? how short can I cut it and how should I protect it after cutting?

tail light is far more important than a headlight ;)

I agree with jags about rearward visibility, but one can always choose to use an LED blinky instead.

If I wished to terminate the taillight lead, I'd do so with a female connector (no exposed leads to short out) and then cap it with a (bolt) thread protector to prevent water entry. This way, you'd have essentially no lead left (except for a short stub, long enough to solder the connector, so perhaps 1.5cm minimum) while preserving the option to someday hook up a taillight if you wished.

I wouldn't just cut the wire and just leave the ends exposed. If you do cut it, best to cap it in some way. vinyl thread protector ca in black or some contrasting color will do the job. Heat-shrink tubing won't close the end as nicely.

Preferences can change over time, and if you plan to keep the light for a long while, this would keep options open. Alternatively, if you ever wished to sell it on, this would preserve the value over cutting the lead entirely.

As for warranty coverage, I don't think the result would be any different than simply trimming the end for a shorter run; the light itself remains unaffected.

Best,

Dan.

I would, but for two things:
1) Not enough time.
2) Not enough hands.

Working on both, then we'll see results! ;D

All the best,

Dan.

Thanks! I didn't got notifications, I didn't totally got it done in the proper way, but as soon as I can find the things I need I will!
