Am I going blind or have the Nomad X series disappeared from the Thorn range?

Am I going blind...
No, Brummie; your eyes are fine -- sharp, I'd say!

Yes, in terms of the SJS Cycles' online catalog. I have been helping a friend decide between a Nomad X and a (new) Raven and we couldn't find any "X" frames listed in the SJSC online inventory. I don't see the X mentioned in the latest brochure ( http://www.sjscycles.com/thornpdf/ThornRavenNomadBroHiRes.pdf ) Issue 26, Late Summer 2013.

The Nomad X is still described on pages 13-14 of the Summer 2013 Update to Andy Blance's publication, "Living with a Rohloff [Hub]" ( http://www.thorncycles.co.uk/thornpdf/ThornLivingWithARohloff.pdf ).

Dave, d'you have any word on the Nomad X's disposition?

Best,

Dan.

A bit of detective work suggests that the X-series frames are still on the website as 'Nomad' frames... there are two frames showing in each colourway ( also with/out S&S couplings ) - The giveaway is MEDIUM top tube lengths ONLY.

I could be wrong? Maybe someone ( Dave? ;D) could enlighten us all?

Great detective work, Brummie! I see the little "X in O" symbol on the upper seat tube as well.

Best,

Dan.

I notice in the brochure that although there is several references to a rear disc brake option on the order form (Rohloff Hub choice etc.) there is no cost options for disc brakes as there used to be. The main brake section states if you are going to have rear disc don't chose v brake option. However the rest of the next page appears blank where the disc options used to be - maybe work in progress

Nomad X framed bikes are now being sold off on SJSC website with Alfine hubs as 'commuting bikes'.  It seems the demand wasn't there for them as tourers.

Well-spotted, Jim!

Here are two examples:

Photos of each attached below. Some very nice bikes-for-purpose.

...And the ad copy from Andy Blance himself:

We don’t often make mistakes but we misjudged the market when we introduced the X series Rohloff quipped Nomad. Almost all Nomad customers have chosen the original heavy duty Mk2. We have decided to discontinue the X series Nomad and we plan to sell through the existing stock, by building these frames into Shimano Alfine 8 speed (hub gear) equipped commuting bikes. The X series frames have smaller diameter tubes and seat stays than the Nomad Mk2, so they are more comfortable when used with moderate loads. The thick walls of the top tube, down tube, seat stays and fork blades make these frames ideal for the rough treatment that can be expected when using a U lock to secure a frame to immovable objects. We have fitted a Thorn Expedition carrier and so these bikes will carry any amount of shopping home, without problems. Straight out of the box, the Thorn Alfine X Commuter also makes an ideal bike for a fortnight’s holiday ,in gently rolling countryside - the Alfine 8 hubs do not, in our opinion, have a sufficient gear range for adventure touring in mountains. We have made several economies to make these bikes so competitively priced; we’ve used components we’ve had to hand, we’ve used Alfine 8 speed hub gears and we’ve reduced the lifetime warranty to 5 years. There must be some cyclists who are strong enough to ride around the world with a limited gear range. Please do not buy this bike with this purpose in mind…we will not extend the famous Thorn Rohloff warranty, which goes way beyond your statutory rights, to include the Alfine 8 hub. This is a brilliant bike, for the purposes outlined above buy one whilst we still have stock!
