Rohloff strip-down.

Has anybody had the nerve yet to strip down their Rohloff hub, do you need special tools? I usually take most things to bits out of curiosity to see how they work but must admit I’ve chickened out up to now.[:I]

Can't wait for mine to breakdown. Reckon you only need a Birmingham spanner and a screwdriver.

You will need a chain spanner, Rohloff sprocket tool, Torx TX20 screwdriver and a rubber mallet.  A torque screwdriver may also be useful to get things tightened properly.  You will also need a new set of paper gaskets and new set of torque transfer joints.

Good Luck – Please Please let me know how it goes, I have being thinking of striping it down myself.

Thanks stutho, do you know where you can get the gaskets and torque transfer joints from?

Brass monkey,

We do have the gaskets in stock but they only need to be replaced if they become damaged, they are not a consumable item.

Whilst taking the internals out of the shell will not affect your Rohloff hub guarantee, it really is a very bad idea.
There are several key steps when correctly reassembling the hub that you must get right. If you do not correctly reassemble the hub it will not fully function as expected. If this occurs the hub will need to be returned to Rohloff at your cost, they can easily see whether the shell has been opened and then rectify the problem.

We have several staff that have received Rohloff training in Germany to perform the procedure of disassembling and swapping hub internals correctly using specific Rohloff tools.

PLEASE NOTE
Rohloff state that "if you dismount the locking nut onto the axle (the aluminium nut)" your guarantee is lost.

Thorn Cycles Ltd do not recommend that you disassemble your own Rohloff hub!

I can take some shots of the internal if that would be of interest?

Andrew, like stutho I am cursed with engineering curiosity but I think in this case common sense will prevail.  I would be most interested if there are some shots available as, no doubt, others will find them interesting too.

Don't do it! I have heard of someone who tried to strip a Rohloff down and got into big trouble[:(] The whole idea of the gears is that you leave them alone and they do the job.

Andrew,

My motivation is that I have a small fault on my hub and no warranty.  (Plus I am really itching to have a look :-)

Would I be correct in assuming that there are no specialist tool required to 'just' remove or refit the gear unit as described on pages 110, 111, 112 of the repair section of the user manual - none are listed.  Personally that is as far as I am likely to go – at least without a copy of the workshop manual.  I agree that stripping down the gear unit itself would be very foolhardy.

I doubt that removing and inspecting the gear unit will shed any light on the problem with my hub but at least I will have tried.

Get it sent back, Rohloff are very reasonable when it comes to out of warranty repairs, somtimes not charging at all.
