Stuck Carbon Seatpost!
« on: January 29, 2006, 07:41:37 PM »
I have a Cyclosportif which I fitted a carbon seatpost to last year, and is now stuck solid!!  Anybody got any ideas on how to remove it?

The reason I was going to remove it (and welcome your ideas on this too) was thatthe bike feels a bit sluggish with this seatpost and was going to try an alloy one to liven things up a bit. Does this seem valid or shall I just leave it in?

Cheers

Cheeky

Having Googled "seized carbon seatpost", it seems that carbon seatposts are prone to seizing. Apparently manufacturers recommend not to grease them, but it seems that some people do so to no ill effect.

As for whether to leave it in or not, if the bike were mine, I would want to remove it, as further corrosion could damage the frame.

Cheeky, you don't really think changing to an aluminium seatpost would make the bike more lively, do you?[:0][;)]

the alloy seatpost was stuck on my steel framed tandem ...

i put a little crc [wd40 type stuff] into the seat tube after removing the bb, i also used a little ammonia as well ...

i took off the seat, and put the seatpost head into a large vice and then used the bike frame to loosen it ... after a few cycles of going abck and forth, i jumped up on the bench and started lifting as i was moving it and it just worked its way up the post and off ...

use anti-seize grease when you re-install it ...

try these couple of websites too ...

The easiest thing to try is to remove the seatpost binder bolt. Then go for a ride on some good bumpy roads. If the planets are suitably aligned, the post will start to slip and you'll be all right, mate! Bring the binder bolt with you so that you don't have to stand all the way home.

Hope this does the trick,
John

Thanks for all the help guys, I've tried variations on all these themes but with no effect.  I guess it wil be a case of just applying a little more leverage/ride on bumpier roads past the point where my "mechanical sympathy" takes over and stops me applying any more pressure!!
