Iceland with sherpa
« on: May 19, 2013, 04:33:43 PM »
Hello all, just booked my flights for a tour of western Iceland. Second half of July.
Does anyone have up to date info regarding getting a bike in a box to a camp site from airport and being able to leave box for two weeks until return?
This wil be my first flight with bike.I take it a bike shop cardboard box is OK?

thanks again

Hi SN!

So glad the trip is a "go" -- all good wishes your way.

I think I have an answer to your question here: http://userweb.eftel.com/~wheelbuddies/iceland/iceland2009/i200901.htm

If you leave the Reykjavik airport and spend your first night and last nights at Alex Camping 5km from the terminal, you can leave your box and pick it up again on your return. They also offer shuttle service between the airport and campings.

The box storage offer is confirmed on their website, here: http://alex.is/bikes/

Custom Google search with reviews here: http://tinyurl.com/aazqus5

The same offer might hold true at one of the 125 other registered campsites. There's lots of cycle-touring-related websites and online resources for those wishing to cycle Iceland. Here's one: http://www.cycletourer.co.uk/cycletouring/iceland.shtml

Hope this helps. Wonderful times ahead for you; don't forget the camera for us!

Best,

Dan.

This guy, also a Dan from the http://cycleseven.org/ website cycled and sang his way around Iceland in 2011. His website must surely be worth a look even if you are not named Dan!

Thank you guys, The Alex camping was an early consideration, but on checking their website,it says "not available anymore" yet Dan's links showed that there are trip advisor reviews from just last month!  Anyhow, I have emailed them tonight. If that is not suitable.A bus to the city with bike will be grand as I am heading north. Will look into this.
cheers
