Do Thorn not make a Rohloff ATB any more?
« on: May 13, 2013, 03:44:48 PM »
As well as my Rohloff RST that I bought a couple of years ago, I have a Catalyst ATB (mountain bike) that I bought in about 2005 that has given great service. One of the advantages of the Rohloff is it will keep going through mud and grime that knackers mere derailleurs. Surely this is a sad thing if Thorn no longer make Rohloff ATBs? :-[

I...you're right! At least so far as a dedicated model goes. The Ripio is intended for derailleurs. The closest thing I can see in the present line is the lighter-weight and sus-corrected Nomad "X", equipped with an optional Thudbuster seatpost and a suspension fork.

Best,

Dan.

We don't I'm afraid, they just didn't sell well enough, MTB bikes are largely a fashionable thing, at the end of the day we just ain't fashionable when it comes to MTB's so we leave it to the likes of Cannondale, Specialized, Marin, Trek etc

We have a few small Sterling frames left and as Dan correctly points out a Nomad X makes a good roughstuff ATB/Tourer with a sus fork.

Hope this helps, keep that Catalyst in good nick  ;)

Hi All!

For those who might not remember the remarkable Catalyst -- or missed it, back in the day -- here is a nice introduction and summary of the 2005 Catalyst's qualities written by Thorn's Andrew in Fall 2004: http://www.thorncycles.co.uk/forums/index.php?topic=365.msg2232#msg2232

Has the Ripio been discontinued?

I can't see it on the models page anymore.

I don't either, Zero.

The Ripio no longer appears in the individual model listings, though it still shows in the model overview: http://www.sjscycles.com/thornpdf/ThornModelOverviewHiRes.pdf

I suspect the overview just hasn't been updated yet and likely will be soon.

SJS Cycles currently have a 590 S/M built-up as a complete bike at a steep discount (£799.99, was £1,009.99) here:

The Enduro has a MTB pedigree I believe. You can still get the frames from SJS too. There is a splendid Enduro for sale on the forum right now; non suspension fork though I recall. Perhaps a Sterling Mk2 might be in the pipeline he muses. That said the MTB market is saturated so don't hold your breath!!!

Hi Pete!

Ripios come up on eBay every once in awhile, and sometimes as frames alone. Keep an eye out; your dream may yet come true!

Best,

Dan.
