Exceeding my remit

Mindful that some might suggest the forum is largely a male domain I though a perusal of this article might be of interest. http://www.telegraph.co.uk/women/womens-life/10047180/Sexism-is-endemic-in-cycling.-Keep-calm-ladies-and-ride-on.html

It's a curious thing, how gender attitudes and discrepancies vary across subcultures. I work at the intersection of software development and electrical engineering. Software has lots of women but electrical engineering hardly any.

Here is one of my favorite world cycle touring sites:

It's only sexist when it doesn't suit them.  Every woman I know seems quite happy to bat her eyelids, flick her hair and giggle enthusiastically when it suits her needs.

I think we know different sorts of women, Zero; every one I know is at least as capable as myself or any bloke...and sometimes moreso.

This has held in the larger realm of Life in my experience, and I have found it so in the bicycling world as well. I was a tour leader for some years in a past life, and found the female members of my groups were generally more self-sufficient than the guys -- or took pains to learn to become so if they weren't already. One of my best fellow tour leaders was a woman (And still is! She's gone on to head one of the largest non-profits in the Seattle area geared toward redistribution of excess foodstuffs to the hungry and needy).

That said, I found sexism toward women to be an endemic part of the group dynamic in my tour groups and I wouldn't stand for it. Because group dynamics differed from cohort to cohort, I let things settle out on their own giving the benefit of the doubt to higher actions, then called a group huddle on the first incident when it occurred and explained we were all equal on the road, with members varying in ability across the sexes; all had paid their money and were there for the experience. Interestingly, the weakest or most clueless member would often be male...and would also need the most attention; they seemed to have a talent for "independent initiative" (getting lost from the group). I think I rode the routes twice by the time I rounded them up.

Best,

Dan.

Most women are very capable, but I just tend to find that often when sexism is cited all of the times it was used to a woman's advantage are ignored.

Personally I believe the world would be a better place if there was a little more equity for all. Disenfranchisement can be cited as a factor in many personal, collective, national and international encounters being less than satisfactory. I'm all for people advancing on merit but emphatically against advancement on looks, fragrance, or unmerited priviledge. That probably flies in the face of the human experience per se  and singles me out as a crypto-marxist but hey, someone has to be the Agent Provocateur  ;) ;D

I like this thread and would have jumped in earlier but thought better of it.

I think the world would be a better place if we were all men, or women.
But then it wouldn't last long ;D

It is worth remembering also that men and women are different and it's a lot deeper than the obvious differences.  Man and women think and perceive things slightly differently.  Men are risk takers women are nurturers.  The reason is deeply rooted in our evolution.  A man can impregnate a woman in a matter of minutes but a woman will take 9 months to gestate that egg and then many years of nurturing will be required to raise that child to a point where it can survive.  This means that in a biological sense a woman's life is more valuable than a mans.  A woman doesn't just need to be born she also has to reach the age of sexual maturity and so men are predisposed to take greater risks because if the less valuable gender takes the risks, the more valuable gender is given a better chance of survival and that leads to an overall advantage for the species as a whole.

You can actually read into that a biological explanation of chivalry.
