V Brake Removal With Rohloff

I need to remove the left hand v brake to move the spring position and on my Catalyst this is also the stop/adjuster for the Rohloff shifter cables. If I remove the bayonet fittings from the cables to pull them back through the stop will I be able to refit them afterwards or am I being too optimistic!

As the cables have been in place for over 7 years on my all year round off road commuter I probably ought to change them anyway but I'm wondering whether to try to sort the brakes out before I can get hold of new cables.

Try disconnecting the cables and squeezing an Allen key own the bridge when the cables are slack.  I don't think you have to twist the bridge, but not near my bike to check.  If you remove the cable from the bayonets there's a chance they will fray making it difficult o replace but you might be lucky!

Thanks geocycle I'll try that first. I'll order some new cable and outers anyway as it will be worth having spares ready in the tool box.

I changed the brakes on my cycling buddy's Raven Tour last year, and I didn't change the cables.
But, I can't remember whether I took the cables out of the bayonet and refitted them, or if I just undid the bayonets and pulled the cables back and unscrewed the adjusters and managed to get the allen key into the bolt with the inner cables still in place inside the boss.

Dear Avdave,

After seven years the chances are the cables have stretched, allowing you to trim off the minimum needed to get rid of the frayed ends, reset the adjusters and start again. This may buy some time before new cables are inevitable.

I have managed to squeeze an allen key in between the cables as suggested by geocycle, it's possible, but b*ll achingly slow and fiddly.

Jimmer it may be hard to believe but in 7 years I've never had to adjust the cable tension and the adjusters are wound right in  so I possibly won't be able to trim the cable ends. I'll try getting the allen key past the cables later, if it's going to be a real pain I can wait till new cables arrive.

You will get the allen key in no worries if you unwind the adjusters all most all the way.

Thanks Dave,what size allen key will I need, it's a Catalyst with I assume the standard cable stop?  The new cables and outers are on there way from you so I may change them anyway but on the other hand they might just go in the tool box. I seem to have a whole collection of bits for the Rohloff thinking I'll need to change this soon but nothing ever seems to go wrong or even need adjusting.

All fixed once I'd cleaned 7 years worth of grime and mud out of the cable stop.
