Thorn Explorer Tandem, size L/S. £699

Picture here; https://dl.dropbox.com/u/60671498/Tandem%20bike.JPG

I bought this about 18 months ago thinking that my wife and 11 year old son would love to team up with their Dad/husband to chew up the miles and enjoy my wonderful company. It’s not worked out that way which is why you can snap up a hardly used and pristine tandem for a bargain price.

My mistake was to buy my son a Dawes Espoir scaled down road bike which he flies on and to get my wife a Specialised Vita lady specific sports bike. Now neither of them will get on the tandem being much more interested in cycling past me at every opportunity.

The size would suit a pilot of 5’10” to 6’4” and a stoker of 4’8” to 5’6”.

It shows all of the usual attention to detail that every Thorn bike gets so all of the kit is top notch and in perfect working order. I’ve added a Karasawa Tandem Drag brake which is brilliant for slowing you on steep descents plus it’s a superb parking brake.

The tyres are top of the range Continental Touring Plus, rims are hard wearing Sun Rhino plus there’s a rear carrier attached.

Gearing is via Thorn’s standard Shimano Acero rear derailleur, rear cassette is Shimano HG41 8 Speed 11-34T and it’s all operated with excellent Modolo Morphos shifters. The rim brakes are Suntours which are standard on many of Thorn’s tourers.

I’ll be keeping the peddles and bottle cages.

Any questions feel free to call on 07779 119 652 or email martinblain@outlook.com. I live near to Bath and suggest that it’s pick up only as I don’t think I could post it.

Hi Martin!

Welcome to the Forum!

As a tandem owner who also can't find anyone to ride it with, I can surely feel for your situation. It's truly a lovely bike, and I don't think you'll be waiting long to find a buyer. Some outstanding sales photos to go with it, too.

Best of luck!

Perhaps the proceeds might go toward a Thorn single for yourself, so you can ride with the family?

Dan.

Those cranks look about 45 degrees different in phase. I've been fascinated by set-ups that are 90 degrees different. What's the logic behind a 45 degree difference?

I have some frequent flyer miles saved up. Bath sounds nice... we watch all the different productions of Persuasion! It would probably fit my sweetheart and I quite nicely. Ah, my rich fantasy life!

Jim! Go for it...you and your sweetie neeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeed a tandem! Really! No foolin', it could be an ideal solution to getting her out to ride with you. They're huge amounts of fun, and ideal if your stoker "doesn't ride" otherwise.

The idea of having cranks out-of-phase is to help one past the dead spots at TDC and BDC. If they're only a bit out of phase, it is less effective in that way, but easier for both parties to pick up the pedals from a stop. Nifty graphic with full explanation here: http://tandemgeek.wordpress.com/2010/03/20/tandem-riding-in-phase-or-out-of-phase/

Best,

Hi Martin,
We're definitely interested in the tandem - it looks like it would fit my son and me. I've e-mailed to discuss; we live near to Bath and could pick up easily.
Best,
Richard
