Brummie,

This *is* good news, indeed. I was using the default "legal low" of 40x17, but have now ordered a Thorn "up to" 38T bash guard and a 36T Surly stainless chainring to go with my 17t cog, giving a wonderful spread including truly low gears I will indeed use for loaded touring, as shown in the little chart attached here: http://www.thorncycles.co.uk/forums/index.php?topic=4412.msg29041#msg29041

Now, if Hebie will just make a Chainglider to go with the 36T 'ring! I've written them to ask if this is in their immediate plans, but they are off and away for the holidays, returning 7 January 2013.

Brummie, will you gear lower as well? If so, what do you have in mind?

All the best,

Dan. (...who loves Rohloff limbo contests..."How low can you go?")

<Shhhh...Brummie!>

<be verrrrry quiet about "only the Nelson Longflap">  :-X ...and the 44x16 combo will make you appear as Superman!  ;) (at least to me with a 36x17)

After all...no one knows what's in The Nelson Longflap, and those bags can carry everything!  :D

Best,

Dan. (...who thinks Brummie may have Legs of Steel with that 44x16)

I've always wondered why they 'outlaw' low ratios, when the same mech (albeit with longer cables and bigger spoke holes!) can suffice on a heavily laden touring tandem. ???

Just to clarify I'm reading it right I can now run with 34-16 on my 29er and that's pretty much a standard gearing equal to a triple set up on a 26" mtb , with a 17" low and losing a bit of top gear topping out at 90" rather than about 96"

You got it, Firestarter. 34x16 is a ratio of 2.125, permitted. Gear inches would depend on the tyre circumference. With a Big Apple 60x622 the range is 17.5 to 91.8 gear inches. 36x17 will give you a tenth of a gear inch extra at the bottom end; pretty much of a muchness, though the bigger cogs might last a fraction longer.

And I believe that using a 17t sprocket will give you a longer chain life.

<gasp!> My, that is a lovely thing, Pete! It even has an integrated bash guard.  Wowzers, that is a thing of beauty! I can hardly tear my eyes away, and I am sta...no...must.not.succumb to its Siren song, or all is lost; I'll be penniless and living under a bridge!  ::)  Jags, tie me to the mast and save me; this is bling-and-a-half, but subtle and "Class"!

The only thing that will save me from this beauty (which, I see, even comes in black if desired) is the Surly stainless I have already in my hot little hand, and the Thorn bash guard that is winging its way here. I can reverse the much harder stainless Surly 'ring when it starts to wear, and if I damage the bash guard...it won't also do in the chainring, as it might here.

Ah, me. It's nice just knowing such examples of CNC milling exist, Pete, and I appreciate hearing about it. Thanks for keeping me in mind!

All the best,

Dan. (...who has seen the equivalent of the puppy in the pet shop window and can't unsee it now)

I could just see your black Nomad with the iconic gleaming gold chain-ring and bash guard on it. Bling-extravaganza  ;D
