Is this a good combo: xtr hubs/araya rm400 pros?
« on: June 05, 2005, 09:56:29 PM »

for my rivendell atlantis (which takes 26" wheels) I've
been offered a pair of original xtr hubs laced to araya rm400pro
rims (32 spokes) for US$200...is this a good deal?
I'm not familiar with these rims and excuse me for sounding naive
(as i've never built up a frame by itself before) but
can these hubs (100mm front/135mm rear) be laced for a higher
spoke count, ie 36, if I ever wanted to do a loaded tour with the atlantis? I weigh 165 lbs.

Cheers
Joe

You canīt add more spokes to a wheel than there is holes in the rims and hub for. A well built wheel with 32 spokes could work. But 36 are so much stronger so why risk it?
If you want to use the bike for both commuting and touring either buy wheels with 36 spokes right away and get used to a slightly less responsive bike. Or buy an extra set of wheel later, fit them with quality touring tyres, and have them ready and waiting for some serious biketrips. Canīt advice you on the rims, but make sure they are fitted with double eyelets and that the wheel is built by a skilled mechanic!
