Hi Steve!

Thanks for posting a terrific photo of a wonderful bicycle. Any bicycle gets me going, but a gorgeous one like this makes my heart race.

Banned? I don't think so. While the list is Thorn-specific, a lot of other components and products have bearing on the list topics. This bike has a handlebar-mounted Rohloff shifter (a Berthoud, which we have discussed at length), S&S couplers, beautifully routed cabling, a nicely executed belt drive and seatstay split, sliding dropouts and no eccentric; all recent topics of discussion. It even has an extended front mudguard not unlike my Nomad's! Kevin Sayles, onetime Thorn frameshop builder, has now returned to his post at Woodrup so that's a connection as well.

Many of us own bikes other than our Thorns, and it is nice to sometimes carryover our preferences from one to another in our setups. Lots here to draw upon and consider in setting up a Thorn.

Nice to see for comparison's sake, methinks, and appreciating as a fine example of the custom framebuilder's craft.

Best,

Dan.

Hi Dan, Tongue was very firmly planted in cheek ;D

You are right about there being lots to draw on, learn from and give inspiration.
Kevin certainly has a gift.

And all made in Reynolds 953 Stainless Steel if I am not mistaken.

Absolutely fabulous. Did you manage to get any details on it at all. Was it a customer build or just a flight of fancy.

I do think the Refnolds 953 could be used to build a fantastic touring bike. Only slightly biased as stainless steel was a family invention in the distant past. Like all good inventions it was found by accident. It was noticed that one of the test pieces of steel (my family owned a steel works in sheffield at the time) that had been left outside was still nice and shiney while all the others had rusted.

A customer specific build.

Yes 953 but a pity it has been painted really. The Woodrup signage on the down tube is not a transfer but the stainless steel showing through.
A work of art in my opinion as are the lugs.
I think I would have to put in on my living room wall (when not riding it of course).

I would have thought you should get a discount Andy with that family history

If only it worked like that.

It kept the family comfortable for a while but like all discoveries it is open to the general market after a while.

It is a nice family story to tell. Maybe one day a 953 bike just for family history.

Beautiful. Woodrup in the unpainted "base" material, that's really class. -- AJ

There is this Woodrup up on ebay now which looks very nice too. They certainly have an eye for elegance.

I've been looking at the Woodrup bikes too. Why does that make me think of AA meetings!? Anyway, here is a great flickr link, belt drives and rohloffs too! I never gave much thought to lugs until I saw some of these.

The red Chimera BD on page 5 is my mate's Paul.
He borrowed my RST for a few years! Then fashioned his belt drive Rohloff Chimera on the RST.
I then was able to reclaim my bike back. To be fair I had gone the way of the derailleur but then saw some sense and am glad to be reunited.
Paul's bike is a beauty and the belt is very quiet.

I hope that this has not become a Woodrup thread, because here is MY idea of Roholoff porn:
