Hi All!
The bicycle-electronics covergence continues at the InterBike bicycle show in Las Vegas, Nevada.
The latest evidence comes in the form of a crash-sensor that attaches to any helmet. When it experiences a user pre-defined level of impact, it sends a text message with GPS coordinates to contacts' smarphones, notifying them of a potential crash and showing them where the injured rider is. In the event of a false alarm, the wearer can cancel the notification within a given timeframe.
Projected cost is USD$200 with a USD$10 annual subscription additional.
There have been times I could have used this; laying unconscious for a time is not fun, and -- in pre-cellphone days -- a real struggle to find a phone booth or a helpful resident to place even an emergency call afterwards (sadly, people here do not take kindly to blood-soaked strangers knocking on their doors). Once, I had to walk some distance to my father's office for help in such a state after breaking a helmet open on a street curb after riding shirtless (I left a good part of me at the scene...and a clear trail after). Something like this would have been very handy, but before its time.
