Custom Framebags On Nomad Mk.1
« on: June 06, 2012, 07:20:28 PM »
I've recently had Porcelain Rocket, based out of Victoria, Canada, make me up some custom frame bags. The result is incredible versatility and balance... I'd definitely recommend this set-up route for other Nomad lovers.

My!

That surely is a nice-looking setup, VF, and it can't be beat for centralizing weight between the axles. Beautifully made and executed, and a fine-looking result. I've seen other bikes with these bags and came away impressed each time.

My only hesitation with such for myself relates to my need for massive water carriage on my unsupported solo desert crossings. Still, instead of bottles, a person could substitute something like an MSR Dromedary water bag inside one of the midframe bags and simply refill the two accessible outside bottles as needed.

Have you added any sort of protection for the paint finish under the straps? I would imagine a full load would go far toward minimizing any movement and bounce, but would be a little concerned about the possibility of scuff-through over the long haul. I'm thinking a wrap of tape of some sort would address any concerns.

One last question: I'm guessing these are made from coated fabrics, but might not be waterproof in the way Ortlieb panniers are. Do you use plastic bags or dry sacks inside to keep things dry?

Thanks for the photo; it surely does a nice job illustrating all the advantages of these bags (and how nice they look!). A gorgeous, balanced load.

Best,

Dan.

VF,

I just looked in greater detail (my Linux distro has a "zoom screen" function) and I'm wondering if you can detail what you carry where? I see there's a small bag between the rear fender and seat tube, for example. Looks ideal for something like a mini-pump and spare spokes, for example. And the little top-tube bag? Maybe for a cell phone and such?

Best,

Dan.

Hey Dan,
Water was my big concern when changing my setup towards frame bags. I always carry a 10 litre Drom in addition to the 2.5 litres my bottles carry. With my old setup I would always have to strap the 10 litres on the back, now I have more room to do this. I've also added another 4 litre drom so I'm confident I can carry the 16 litres I know I need for a couple of days in the desert.
You are right, the bags aren't as waterproof at one gets used to with Ortlieb. This isn't a problem as the main framebag houses my waterproofs, tent poles and firstaid kit (which is in a roll top dry bag), plus a few smaller odds and sods like spare cables. The top tube pack houses snacks, painkillers, electrolyte powder, anti-chafe and the such like. The cheeky little bag behind the seat tube is perfect for a couple of tubes, my front light (which I still carry for some reason) and a basic puncture repair kit. There is also a pocket in there that perfectly houses my mini pump.

Balance and component preservation were my main motivations in setting things up this way. It's exciting after a couple of years sticking with the same setup to have a change and improvement.

Thanks for your interest.

That looks useful.  I use a Jannd Frame Pack on my Nomad, but it makes accessing one of the water bottles awkward.  I guess ditching the bottles and going for a couple of Platypus type bladders in a pack like that would work well.

Scott is a one man operation so these won't be going into production as such. However, he does now have the frame dimension information required to make bags for a 537l Thorn Raven Nomad Mk.1 with SS couplings.

Fantastic looking setup.  Possibly impossible to "out Butch" that.

Agreed, Fred; looks like something the Special Forces would have. Or should. Maybe they already do!

Want. Of course!

Best,

Dan.

I've just come back from the CTC's York Rally.  UK manufacturer Alpkit had a stand there,  pride of place was given to a cross bike rigged up for bikepacking.  Seat and handlebar bags appeared to be modifications of their established dry bags, and to be honest I didn't look at them in any detail.  My attention was taken by an impressive looking full frame bag, this looked very well put together and I'm told they will be special order jobs, made to fit your bike for approx £100..

Bikepacking is cool for offroad/mountain bike riding, BUT for road cycling not so good if your riding with cross wind's! I have seen cyclist blowing about.  :o
Not a fun thing to which, I have a friend that made me a set of custom bags for my Africa cycle trip this year (http://kiwipetescyclingsafari.blogspot.co.nz/2012/01/bike-bags-made-and-fitted-and-tested.html) the bags where not full frame bags so that wind would not blow me about.
Pete....
