2009 S&S coupled Nomad, size 587L for a taller rider. Seller claims ~8,000mi and no air transport. Normal wear and claimed regular maintenance. Spares including spare front wheel, tires, Ortlieb rear panniers, pickup only.

Audax by SJS Cycles. Black and pretty; looks fast. Lugged, from 1996. SJSC says this is ideal for a 6ft+ rider, with a 620mm seat tube (c-c) and 610 top tube. Mostly RX100 with some XT in the component mix.

(Yet another) Voyager kidback derailleur tandem. Black. Includes August 2005 invoice and looks nice but auction listing is a little short of hard data, like frame size. Includes sales invoice. Collection only.

Explorer derailleur tandem. Nice red/orange/yellow paint. with some scratches and minor rust. 27-sp LX drivetrain, cranks sized for location/users.

Something strange about it though as the dimensions don't fit.
The quoted size "size is 587L" is strange did thorn change their sizes since 2009?
The Nomad2 comes in a 590L but the actual seat tube dimension is way out, 460mm (590L) vs 527mm (Above advertised 587L)
The virtual top tube advertised is 635mm which is only matched to the 620L Nomad2.

Am I wrong or is there something off with it?

Yeah, Iain, I noticed that as well, and now it has been pulled, just as you said.

 I feel a little torn about posting these things, as there seem to be as many with problems as not these days. Still, it is a way to "move into" a Thorn for those who don't have the scratch to get into one directly or aren't sure they want one with the "perfect" dimensions for them until they become familiar with what a Thorn is or can do, or to buy a second model for a spouse. I've talked to a number of people who ordered new from Thorn/SJS Cycles *because* they had owned one that was "nearly right" and later wanted the real deal with spot-on measurements.

Any number of reasons could explain the size anomaly, but I noticed it too (sharp eyes, Iain; we've both read the ink off those brochures  ;)). So many eBay listings are sort of cobbled together from a mishmash of owner measurements and Thorn brochure data. And, of course, a few of late have been stolen or have questionable provenance. A person really has to look sharp to know what they're getting. A good argument for buying from Thorn/SJSC, but there are genuine and legitimate bargains to be had if sufficient care is used.

Keep asking questions, folks; we all benefit from close scrutiny of the listings.

Hello men, The S&S Nomad was pulled because somebody got in quick and made him an offer he couldn't refuse. It's now mine  :) :) :) :) :) :)
Comes complete with original invoice made out to the address where I collected it from. It was an 8 hour round trip train journey but worth every second.
Whilst it is reassuring to see you guys have eagle eyes and have noted a few stolen bikes over recent times, I try and take a more pragmatic view and think that the person selling it is just not spending as much time thinking about the bike as we all are on the forum. Therefore leading to the odd strange bit of information now and again.
There was also stuff in the ad which didn't make sense if the bike was stolen. A spare wheel for instance and spare tyres.

My view of Thorn owners is they are usually one of two types of people.
1. The people who know all about bikes and have done loads of research and want it for a specific purpose and 2. People who can afford the best and just buy it, no questions asked.
I put forward these points of view along with the more cautious ones to hopefully help anyone looking for a used Thorn at a decent price.
I now have a Raven Tour and a S&S Nomad both purchased from ebay at knockdown prices and both with original invoices from SJS to the seller.
I had been looking for an S&S Nomad for nearly three years and the Raven for a year when I bought it so I was very ready to pounce ;D
The iphone/ipod ebay app is definitely the way to go for finding out quickly about stuff on ebay.

As far as the sizing goes I'm going to give SJS a call this morning, but I have a feeling this may be the pre front suspension capable Nomad. It has no gusset. They built a few of these when they first started making the Rohloff Nomad. Most of these had S&S couplings.

It's exactly the same size as my Raven Tour so I will have it set up in no time.

A whole extra world of camels,taxis,small boats and mountain buses awaits me with my new steed.
I'd rather have a bottle in front of me than a frontal labotomy

Ah that would explain it and is what I was asking.

I hadn't heard of a 587L Rohloff Nomad.

I had wondered if it was a re-badged 587L Raven Tour but had concluded that it wasn't as when comparing the photo in the advert and a photo of a 587L Raven Tour it was quite clear that the geometry was different. That and the fact the the dimensions didn't fit with any Rohloff Thorn I knew about or could find made me curious.

I would have contacted the seller but it was there and gone again "no longer available for sale" so quick that I just replied to Dan's post with my query

Anyway, glad it's a good'un, hopefully there will be more posts about it and the adventures you get up to together.

I spoke to Steve at SJS and it is indeed that rare beast a Nomad MK1.5 (not it's official name) :) Same load capacity as the MK11 but not able to take front suspension forks.
I'm just in the process of destickering, cleaning and moving my favourite bits over from the Raven Tour to it.
It's quite hilarious to look at now as it has super skinny gatorskin tyres, the bars are super high on the steerer and the seat has been lowered so I can pedal the 180mm crank arms properly. It feels like a sit up and beg Dutch bike.
I'll keep you posted when it looks a bit more tour worthy.
