I don't know if a thread like this goes here .. or in the muppets isle (what is a muppet, and what does he have with his own section, btw?)
As I was playing with my bike the last few gorgeous days I started to take some snaps from the side of the road. I've been fantastically inspired by the posts of others here showing those exotic locales in which they live. My neck of the woods? Small town, near a medium sized city -boring. But I though, who knows, perhaps someone in England or Australia may think THIS place is interesting. So as I ride I've been snapping pictures of my everyday world. The country here is a mix of the old and the new. The new is well on its way, changing the landscape, transforming it from the quintessential capital letters South to - well, someting that is undefined as of yet. A kind of tacky, McMansion landscape. I guess it is a shame to not notice, to not look. The old image of the South won't exist for long.
So as I was fiddling with the bike I puttered around my town, Selma, camera in hand. Well, camera in Carradice Super C bar bag ... to be exact.
Random pink house on the street behind mine. When we moved here (from Toronto) we were shocked at the affordable house prices.
local elementary school and the state tree - the dogwood, in bloom.
local church ... one of the 6000 or so in town
Selma was a typical mill town of the South. There is still one lady "down the street" with whom I chat sometimes who tells me stories of working there as a child.
This is what is left of that.
I believe this was the former doctors place ... way back when.
The main drag. No new restaurant survives for long. I might have to learn to cook my own eggs soon.
Selma is quite proud of its railroad heritage. Each year we have a festival, which is wildly popular called "Railroad Days". People still go, pull out lawn chairs and sit, talk, and wait for trains to go by. I couldn't believe it when I first saw that.
The grain mill on the outskirts. They are tearing down half of it this year - I hear.
and finnaly ... my front porch ... the bicycle tinker shop, slash, beer sip'n station.
Well, I hope you've enjoyed this short tour even though there were few Nomad pics. (Hope the load times are ok)
I hope ya found it quaint. Come visit, y'all!
