48-36-26 chainset for 26 wheels

Dear all,

Has anybody use 48-36-26 chainset for 26 wheels' derailleur bike?

Currently I use 44-32-22 on my 26-x Bianchi. And to be honest 44-11 is not so easy to pedal and could be used only on flat tarmac. But quite offten I feel that I need more speed. Now I thinking about switching to 48-36-26. What I want is more speed and more easily accelerate when needed. Guy at bike shop told me that it will be only harder to pedal at higher gear. His advise was to go to 44-32-22 Deore with intergrated axis, which I never tried before?

What would be your opinion?

If you find 44-11 hard to peddle them 48-11 is going to be harder. To be honest the only way to get more speed is to get fitter. Personally I found I was a lot faster after having lost 20kg  ;D

44-11 with 26" wheels - that is something like a 104 inch gear - I would think of that as suitable for any flat terrain - more like going down a big hill! At a 90 rpm cadence, that would be over 30 mph I do believe!

Speed is a funny business. If one can be sure that the road is clear, that no truck will pull out of a driveway halfway down the hill, then sure why not have really tall gears that let you go 50 mph down big hills. That would work for a race course that is protected. But for the real world... low gears are nice for climbing steep hills, but I think the big gears are not very useful - too dangerous, really!

The reality is that the next lower gear from 44-11, which is 44-XX (don't remember exactly the number of teeth) is too easy now as I switched from 2.0 initial tyres to 1.5 Schwalbe Marathon Racer.  Actually after that switching I started using 44-11 quite often (on flat terrain).

I expected that 48-XX would give me more room to accelerate and will allow more comfort at the same time (to maintain the speed with less efforts).

Thanks for your opinion.  I was told the same by mechanic at the bike shop.
