What do you call your Thorn?
« on: July 30, 2011, 05:41:45 am »
Hi All,

I am moving ever closer to placing my order for a Sherpa and am now wondering what to call it when it arrives.  I suppose bikes should have a proper name, though you'd never know it from what I call mine now -- "the blue bike", "the maroon bike", "the Miyata", "the Folder", "the tandem", etc.  I know, the bikes already have a manufacturer's name right on the side of the downtube in most cases, but that's not very um, personal.

I've chosen the satin black finish, and pondered calling mine "Shadow".  Y'know..."me and my Shadow", though it sounds more than a little cliche'.

Since my bike will be a satin finish and all-black even to the components and accessories, I pondered something along a Batman theme and came up empty.

"Tenzing" is a tempting name for a Sherpa, but it doesn't exactly roll off my tongue.

So, what do you call your Thorn, and why?

Thanks for sharing your thoughts,

Dan.

Hi Dan,

My mate calls my bike "dusty" because he says I hardly use it. I call his "pinky" because his is red but looks pink, drives him mad.
My other bike come from your neck of the woods its a Bike Friday.

I think I have to call my RST Busty!

This has nothing to do with bulbous tyres, but stands for 'Blinged Up Sport Tour Yes?'.   ::)

An old one but a lot of new members since last post:: I have named my bike  Rocinante (Rocky for short), hopefully my trusty steed and I are going to have many adventures in faraway lands together.

Alfie, if your Rocinante takes you to Brazil (or vice versa), look for my friend Marcos and his Rocinante: see the fotos below, of his rebuilt Monark, a city bike sold in Brazil until the 70's. (The Brazilian Monark was related to the Swedish manufacturer of the same name.) Marcos has a couple of frames from the 40s & 50s as well. The bikes were widely used in the rural areas as well.

These photos were taken one Sunday afternoon a few months ago, on the Flamengo waterfront in Rio de Janeiro.  In the background is the famous Pão de Açúcar (Sugarloaf Mountain).

Hi John, your friends Rocinante sure is a cool looking retro machine  and what a beautiful setting to show it off, with Sugarloaf Mountain as a backdrop. I would love to be there to see it for real, but for now I'm afraid i'll just have to keep on dreaming of trips in such faraway lands. France, Spain and Portugal are more probable in the not so distant future.

Regards. Alfie the dreamer.

Y'know, Alfie, France, Spain and Portugal are much better places for cycling than Rio de Janeiro.  Marcos took his photos on a Sunday afternoon, when the traffic is a bit more manageable, and the bike lanes are more usable.  Rio has a lot of attractions, not least its mountains and forests, but is a very noisy-stressful-urban place, and not somewhere I'd like to ride a bicycle.
