Refitting rear wheel with Rohloff hub...

May be a silly question but when refitting the rear wheel with a Rohloff hub to a bike with some slack in the chain how should I ensure the sprocket fits back to the chain properly? If there is significant slack surely it's possible for the sprocket to fit too far along the chain one way or the other?

The cranks will simply rotate until the slack in the top of the chain is taken up. At that point the bottom of the chain will be hanging a bit loose.
The bike will ride just fine like this, but if a slack chain annoys you then adjust the eccentric to tighten the chain up a bit.

I leave my chain to go slack until it is almost bouncing off on bumps before adjusting the eccentric.

Thanks for that julk. I too want to leave adjustment of the slack until the last moment as suggested (somewhere) by Thorn. It's peeing with rain in Spain today so I think I'll get on with that puncture repair and give the old Dawes a rest :))

May be worth adding that the Rohloff recommendation of 10mm vertical slack in the chain is a MINIMUM. So anywhere between there and some point of chain slack just before the chain is thrown off is good. A tight chain isn't good engineering anyway; it wears the drivetrain faster and may even put undue strain on the Rohloff box and bottom bracket. -- Andre Jute

While having it quite slack is fine, it is noisier when you stand on the pedals as the chain goes slightly off line with the swaying, when you are at the extreme of such slackness.
