Encounter with a Sherpa in Budapest (Hungary)
« on: July 13, 2010, 04:32:40 PM »
Hello Thorn Owners!

While struggling with the decision making I visited this site a lot and
checked your nice bikes many many times. Now after couple of years of
dreaming finally I can upload some pictures here as well.
I have just finished the building of my new bike: a Thorn Sherpa (610S).
It is my first "new" bike and a dream of couple of years become true for me with this.
It rides fantastically and I hope it lasts for a long time.

All the best!

E

E,
Welcome to the forum.

Your bike looks very nice and well worth the wait to get what you wanted.

How do you find the suspension seatpost in action?
Julian.

Hi Julian,

thanks for your kind words!

my experiences regarding this suspension seatpost:
It depends on your requirements of course as always.
As I am not a racer and usually I am not in a rush: I love it! IMHO it is very comfy, but not spongy at all.
The direction and amount of movement / travel is perfect.
I ordered it due to back problems 3 years ago and I am perfectly happy with it from the first moment.
I commute cca. 6.5 miles almost every day on mainly flat terrain and I like touring amongst the hills as well.
However I know that mechanically it wastes a little energy no question but you do not really feel it because of the
springy effect it helps you to push the pedals somehow and if the road is too steep
you can still "turn it off" by standing out of the saddle. And as it travels back a bit I set my saddle
a little bit lower and it helped my to learn to push the pedals rather "forward" (or horizontally) then "down" (or vertically)
if you know what I mean. (it meant utilizing other muscle groups I guess...)
On the other hand you have to be careful because this can ruin the delicate geometry of the frame & fork & stem etc.
In action e.g. I used it on a 370 miles long tour through the Czech Republic (Dresden-Prague-Vienna) where
we gained ~3000 ft height several days and it worked absolutely fine for me. (with the fully loaded bike).

But this is just my opinion based on my limited experiences.

Kind Regards
Elemer

hi EE welcome  great looking bike nearly as pretty as my own ;D ;D.
you should try a nice set of slick tires on it the difference is amazing ,
when your not touring that is.
but yeah you will get to love your sherpa great bike loaded up dosen't seem to faze it no matter how heavy the load. ;)

Elemer,
Thanks for the feedback on the seatpost, it does sound ideal if you have a back problem which needs a bit more comfort.

I wondered about speccing one on my bike recently but went for a Brooks Flyer saddle instead.

I used to commute to work, now retired I ride the local lanes and go cycle camping when the opportunity arises.

Enjoy your bike.
Julian.

hi jags,

thanks for your kind words!

I would definitely like to buy another set of wheels with more skinny slick tyres in the future.
Do you have a favorite? I used conti city contact but they were too slippery on dusty road for me,
but that could be put down to the strange geometry of the bike I used them on as well :)

all the best,
Elemer

EE I'm still looking for the perfect tire.i recently bought schwalble marathon supreams i taught these were great tires until i went over a small bit of rough ground and the tire wall split not impressed.but i do like the city contacts ,i have my eye on a set of maxxis slicks from chainreaction cycles .
at the moment i have a slick tire thats 27 years old honest, a friend gave it to me it's as good as the day it was made  it cost 35 pounds all those years ago .and on the rear i have the marathon plus ,i dont like marathon plus on the front but that's just me .
anyway glad you like your sherpa safe riding . ;)
