converting disc brake rohloff to non disc
« on: November 11, 2009, 08:43:09 PM »
hi again,
i can get a second hand hub for a good price but its disc brake compatible.
does anybody know if the conversion to non DB (which will be carried out by rohloff in germany) will retain the flawless work of the hub?
cheers

If Rohloff do the conversion then definitely.

The hub cap is a bolt on casting so the job should be relatively straightforward to switch to a standard (non disk brake) hub cap.

But why do you want to change it, surely it will just work for you as is?
I think the disk brake model comes with an external gear mech, which I consider an advantage.

Maybe it's the axle plate that needs changing? Depends what's fitted on the hub and what's required for the frame, I suppose.
Assuming something does need changing, maybe with the correct part(s) and the manual you could save yourself some money...

i was told by rohloff customer service that in order to do it, the hub cap should be changed.
it costs about 40 euro so i might do it.
besides, do you know how much a second hand 3 years old (used 5 times) worth? maybe 600 pounds?
maybe ill sell it on ebay and get my new thorn with brand new hub so i will have the lifetime warranty from thorn.
otherwise if i send it to them to build it over my new frame i dont think the warranty will be applied.
what do you think?

If it's just the hub cap that needs changing then I wouldn't bother. Save yourself 40EUR.

When my Raven Nomad was being spec'd Thorn asked me whether I wanted a DB version even though I wasn't planning on using disc brakes. Their argument was that it would offer me the flexibility in the future. (In the end I declined because I'm never going to use disc brakes on this Nomad, but I could see their point).

Not sure about resale prices, somebody else will have to answer that. I can see the advantage of having a new one for the warranty, though.

As an aside has anyone had experience of converting their hub the other way from V brake specific to disk brake. Is it  something I can do myself or would it have to go back to Rohloff? My riding is now all off road and having put disks on the front the improvement in performance is very noticeable.
