How far did you pedal your Thorn in 2008?
« on: January 03, 2009, 08:30:13 AM »
A thread for those among us who enhance our cycling experience by occasionally glancing at the odometer! No, it still sounds sad, however its phrased.  Oh well!

6040 extremely enjoyable miles during my first year with a Raven Tour.  I couldn't have wished for more from the thing - solid, very reliable, quiet and SO smooth!

Gary.

Not far enough I'm sorry to admit.

4224 miles out of a total of 5004 miles (none of which was commuting).
My average ride distance was 34 miles so it's used for long distances by most people's standards. (154 rides).  Maximum single ride was 377 miles (in 40 hours) so that proves it's as comfortable as most people will ever need.
Since I have 6 bikes I think it's obvious which one I prefer riding.
I've done just under 8888 miles on it since Feb 2006 so I'll be close to 9000 on its 3rd anniversary.

I wore out my rear wheel rim this summer which resulted in a cracked rim.  I can't count that as a mechanical failure as it's just wear and tear.

In 3 years I've only had to fit new brake blocks, replace tyres and spend an hour or so changing the oil (twice).

It's never missed a gear shift.

Far less than in the past :-[
I've swapped my 27 mile a day commute (on the Raven) for 4.5 miles a day (on my single speed bike)
So my total mileage for the year on all bikes is less than 4,500, of which only 1,200 was on the Raven :-[

Without the commuting I beginning to wonder if I need the Raven.  I'm still a fan of the Rohloff, but I am considering putting it into a more appropriate bike for the cycling I'm doing.

10,590 km for me on my Raven Tour, most of it commuting but a good 2,000 km or more was touring.

2,400 miles for me and my Raven Tour (new in March'08).  Mostly on my 12 mile/day commute augmented with local shopping trips and occasional weekend excursions out to a country pub for lunch.

The bike is still working very well, and I'm glad I plumped for a Rohloff-equipped Thorn under my company's cycle scheme - the bike will be paid-for in March, and I've just ordered my first oil-change kit from SJS :-)

My wireless Cateye computer stops working in cold weather, even though I moved the computer itself to the top tube, closer to the transmitter. It says I've ridden a total of 14 km  ;D Although I got the raven at the beginning of winter and haven't had much time to ride it, it's definitely more than that. lol

Only about 2800 miles for me and over half was commuting.  I did a couple of short UK tours and my first 100 mile charity ride but didn't have much time for recreational riding last year.  I hope 2009 gives more opportunities.  Happy new year to all.

Hold on, was I supposed to be keeping a tally? Oh man, I forgot!

Most of the miles I do are commuting, and then not always on the Thorn (somedays I just gotta get a fix of singlespeeding, but not with a fixed gear!) My Nomad does do A LOT of miles, but it hasn't seen much in the way of touring this last year, the only real trip being a quick jaunt West, which you can read about here if you're very bored: http://originalbananaworld.blogspot.com/2008/08/touring-trancing.html

A distraction: Why I Don't Get On With Bike Computers.
This is quite simliar to my reasoning for not caring all that much how much a bike weighs: it's all about feel (bike weight is far less important than how the bike feels to ride, a fact that I wish would get through to prospective bicycle buyers). It's not so much about how far the ride is, more about how far it felt and how you feel after the ride (what balance of pain, satisfaction, tiredness, feeling of achievement, etc.) I've done rides of thirty miles that have left me far more pooped than rides of eighty miles. My daily commute is a little over eleven miles each way, but it's quite hilly and the traffic is horrendous, not to mention it being associated with having to go to work, so I'm regularly more destroyed mentally and physically by it than when I do all-too-rare rides for pleasure.

jawj,

You type like I think, I could agree more about Cycle computers - I don't care what speed I am actually going or how far I cycled, as long as I am enjoying myself!

Having said that I think I did ~ 3600 commuter miles and ~600 tour miles. Hope to do more tour miles this year  (about 90% on the RST)
