Worn out Sun Rhino!
« on: December 24, 2008, 10:52:58 AM »
About 18 months ago I bought a Catalyst with Sun Rhino rims.  This morning, on the way to work the back rim popped!

I knew it was worn but had hoped to get a few more months out of it before trying the carbide rims.  As it is Xmas and want my bike asap I panicked and bought a Mavic 171 at the LBS. I am going to try to rebild it over Xmas (any advice appreciated).

I should have specced ceramic rims at the outset - but opted for the rhinos after using them on my triplet as a cheaper way of getting strong rims.  I think I got that one wrong!

Anyway, 18 months isn't long - so if you have Rhinos - make sure you don't use the abrasive shimano brake blocks and check for wear.  They may be strong but they are not very hard.

Happy Christmas.

Not sure, I dont have a computer but it is about 80 miles/week and a few tours.  So I guess about 6000 miles?  Certainly not huge mileage and all on road.

I live in Gower which is a bit hilly but not excessively so.

I will not use shimano brake pads any more!

Hamish,

Am I right in thinking that you live on Gower and have a strong connection to Knelston School?  If so and you need a temporary lone of a Rohloff back wheel then I can lend you my wife's wheel until the 5th of January.  (She is heading of to London with the kids for the week after Christmas)  Email me directly on stutho at hotmail dot com

Best

Shimano brake blocks destroy rims.  That's widely accepted now I think.

I wore my Sun CR18 rear out after about 6000 miles of hilly all-year riding.

I'm getting a Carbide rim next i think.

Well i built up the new rim - not sure if the spokes are quite tight enough but it is round(ish) and straight(ish).

Thanks for the generous offer Stuart - but it looks as though I have a working bike again! ;D

Better sort the front wheel out now.

I think I will go for carbide rims when it fits in.

Happy Christmas

If your using eyeleted Mavic rims make sure you bend the eyelets towards the spoke or you will start to break spokes, also be very careful to inspect the Mavic rim as they are about 1/2 as thick as a Rhyno rim.

Oh no.....  Thanks Dave.

I was looking at the angle of the spokes earlier on and wondered about that!

I suppose I could bend them one by one rather start again?

May buy some carbide rims though and rebuilt with them -  I understand that they come with special Rohloff drillings.

Koolstop Salmon gets my vote every time. They runs much cleaner than most and stop better than any other block I have tried.

(PS they MUST  to be the salmon version)

Jags,

I just did a quick search on the SJSC site.  They seam to now stock some of the Koolstop range.  In the past I have had great difficulty tracking down these pads. (In my case the replacement cartridge V pads)  Every time I see these for sale I tend to stock up.
