How to adjust handlebar grips?
« on: March 09, 2008, 08:16:06 PM »
I'm tweaking the handlebar setup on my new Raven Tour (see photos http://www.thorncycles.co.uk/forums/index.php?topic=1724.0) and want to rotate the standard "Comfortable handlebar grips" fitted on the Thorn Comfort bars. I've got the SJS Ergo Control bar ends, too.

I've removed the bar end and tried prising the grip loose, but haven't manage to shift it and I don't want to use destructive force.

Is there a technique to twisting them around on the bar?

Thanks in advance, Simon.

Simon,

If your grips of of a stretchy rubber material then you can break the seal with the handlebars by pushing something long and narrow in to make a gap into which you squirt water/washing up liquid and then rotate the grips.

You appear to have ergon grips from the photos. These have an allen bolt clamping them tight at the outward end (see photo). On mine I simply loosen the bolt, rotate the grips and tighten the bolt.

I don't have Ergon grips, I have "Herrmans DD08B Comfort Dual-Density Ergonomic" grips (I found them detailed on the quote) [hopefully, I'll be able to attach suitable images to this message!].

Thanks for your hints ... I managed to slip a slim screwdriver down inside the grip and break whatever seal there was 'twixt grip and handlebar so I can now rotate the grip to my satisfaction.  Hopefully it won't get too loose and flop around  - if it does I guess a squirt of hairspray should fix it (is that really the best adhesive for this purpose?!)

Simon.

Odd I know but yes, hairspray is an excellent adhesive in this case.  It is not to strong so you can remove the grips when needed, it takes a few minuets to set so gives you time to adjust the grips and it will not destroy the rubber.  It all good, plus it very cheap!
