Luggage Allowance on Flights
« on: December 09, 2007, 07:23:39 PM »
Has anyone got any cunning ideas for avoiding excess baggage charges when our Nomads weigh 17.3 kilos unladen and our luggage allowance is 20 kilos? (Apart from buying new kit at our destination) Under current regs we can take 1 piece of hand baggage weighing 7 kilos (hopefully this might change before the end of January).  Getting onto a plane in the UK in January in rain gear, fleeces etc. with loaded pockets isn't a problem but it might be in Singapore.  Anyone had any probs taking pedals in hand luggage?

Thanks in advance.

I think what you are saying is you will be over your limit!

From personal experience, flying from Turkey to India, India to Singapore and then from Beijing to Munich with 2 eXp's you need friendly check-in staff who are prepared to waive or reduce any excess. We found looking pathetic helped, and from Beijing to Munich we paid no excess they told us to take our pannier's as hand luggage (Air China.) Turkish Airlines were quite good too. But Air India were just a joke.

As for the pedals, we took ours off but put them in a pannier and not one airline questioned it.

It really depends on the airline. But if you are over your allowance, then you are over your allowance!
