Agreed, John; I do the same with comments...and have found the same about "noise".
Additionally, on product reviews I go straight to the 1-star "I hated it" ratings to get a preview of what things may go wrong. It is also astonishing to find a segment of the reviewing population leave a 1-star rating to mean they had an excellent experience!

Also, when people are provided free samples to review, the ratings tend to be inflated as well.
