Nomad mk2 & mk3 Frame compatability
« on: August 04, 2025, 05:48:52 PM »
Hello .
I am looking to replace a damaged nomad mk2 rolhoff frame with a mk3 frame , transfer all fittings over
Anyone done this ?? Are all parts a simple swap over & compatible?
Thanks

Not specifically that swap, but I have three Rohloffs and between them they have been in 9 frames (Not all mine) and 4 of those have been Thorns. The hub will be a straight swap, as long as you're keeping the same braking system, you might need new cables, the geometry has changed slightly, I think the cable routing has a little as well. Everything else I can think of is also a straight swap, stem, bars, seatpost, brakes, chainset (Might need new chain).  Forks are different, are you swapping those over?  They'll fit but they might change the handling. haven't really examined the geometry differences, I doubt they're big enough to warrant a different stem, you could either make the comparison, or ride it and see.
Hopefully World Tourer will be along to advise on the riding difference, he's had both. From a component POV, there's no worries.

I thought the BB clamping was different MkII to MkIII?  But it may not be an issue as I think the MkIII has bolts to tighten the frame around the EBB so a used EBB may be OK?

You're right, but the EBB insert comes with the frame and they both take the same standard BB.

I upgraded from a Nomad Mk2 frame to a Mk3 frame, and yes, everything on the frame itself is identical: BB circumference, groove for Rohloff tandem axle plate, seatpost, etc. It took me just a few minutes to move everything over.

There is one caveat though: the fork. Thorn offers a choice of an old-school fork or the Thorn Bikepacking Fork. I strongly recommend the latter, because it fits wider tires and it has the triple-screw mounts allowing both a front rack or cargo cages. The Thorn Bikepacking Fork, however, has a thru-axle and not quick-release dropouts, so you would need a new front hub (or new adapters for a Hope hub) when switching.

Good point, though all Thorn's disc brake forks are now thru-axle and we don't know if PRP's Mk2 has discs.
I was glad to get one of the last QR disc forks, not that I have anything against Thru-axles, but I didn't want the cost of another expensive dynamo.
