Time for a New Rim!
« on: February 08, 2025, 12:20:16 PM »
Time for my wife's touring bike to get new rims. So after a conversation with Rohloff I have received the correct spokes. Since I  work part time in a bike shop I will  have ano fellow assist me in order to lace it identically. Going g with Velocity Cliffhanger 26" rims.
After examining the rims on both of our touring bikes the brake tracks were getting very concave. An d with another European tour coming up it was time.

I have no idea how old your wheels are.  Rohloff now provides reinforcing flange rings with new hubs and they suggest that they be added to older hubs when new wheels are laced up.  Are you aware of these?  Are they already on your rear wheel?

I added the rings to my rear wheel several years ago.

Time…… to get new rims.
Very wise. The Shimano pads that came new on my Nomad were very abrasive. After noticing the wear you describe I delayed and delayed replacing the rim until by chance I noticed that the rim was starting to come apart at the joint. I had a new wheel rebuilt by SJSC including addition of the flange rings Mickeg refers to, to the Rohloff hub. I also converted to disc brake at the back. I now use these V brake pads on the front.

I am using Koolstop Salmon pads on several of my bikes.  Dan suggested them to me as a pad that would both grip better and also extend rim life longer.  I think that was in 2017, very happy with the results.

I am using Koolstop Salmon pads on several of my bikes.

Apart from my Raven Tour "touring" which has CSS rims and therefore special Koolstop CSS brake pads, I also use Koolstop Salmon on most of the family bikes that have rim brakes.

I suspect Koolstop Salmon wear a bit faster than some I have had in the past, but they brake well and seem to cause less rim wear than many other models.

The Swissstop brake pads I have used have also been OK.

Perhaps too late now, but I would suggest Ryde Andra with Sapim Proax nipples. I am surprised rohloff did not mention. Cliffhangers may not be drilled at an angle appropriate for rohloff, which is important for 26" rims. We went through several rims (not cliffhangers), breaking spokes at nipples, before I gave up on US bike shops and built my own wheels based on comments from this forum and rohloff. The Freespoke calculator gives spoke angles and it matches the drill angle on Andra's for a rohloff hub.

I do not disagree, I used Andra 30 rims on my Nomad Mk II, and with Sapim nipples.  But the OP is in USA where Velocity rims are common and Ryde are quite uncommon.  With shipping costs between UK and USA, I am not surprised with his choice.  Since he talked to Rohloff about spoke selection, he probably bought Sapim spokes and nipples.  In my case, my Andra rims were shipped to me in the same box as my new Nomad Mk II frame a decade ago.

Not Rohloff, but I recently had a set of 26" wheels (rim brake, tubeless) built for my 1997 Litespeed Obed and couldn't be happier.

I did get my Sapim spokes from Peter White Cycle as they are a Rohloff dealer.  I have the support rings. Built the wheel up this afternoon.  It is about 5mm larger than the Rigda and it was a bit more of a struggle to get the tire on!
When I spoke with Velocity they have been  using the  Cliffhanger on the Rohloff wheels they built. So I  should b e good.
