Heat retaining cup that fits in bottle cage
« on: September 03, 2024, 01:40:42 pm »
Anyone using or can recommend one of those hot or cold thermos-type cups that fit in a bottle cage? There’s lots about in various sizes with different lids/seals and different heat retaining properties.
I quite like the idea of enjoying a coffee in the middle of nowhere without having to divert to Mrs Tiggywinkles Cafe.

Ian, if you Google "Cyclists thermos" a LOT of options pop up. Here's a precanned search you can click on directy...
https://www.google.com/search?q=cyclists+thermos&oq=cyclists+thermos&gs_lcrp=EgZjaHJvbWUyBggAEEUYOTIICAEQABgWGB4yCAgCEAAYFhgeMggIAxAAGBYYHjIICAQQABgWGB4yCAgFEAAYFhgeMggIBhAAGBYYHjIICAcQABgWGB4yCAgIEAAYFhgeMggICRAAGBYYHtIBCDM3MDRqMGo3qAIAsAIA&sourceid=chrome&ie=UTF-8

One that appears target to cyclists is this...

I've never tried any of these, can't speak to their efficacy as holders of coffee or warmth retention or security in a bottle cage, but the whole concept has me intrigued. Please let us know which one you choose and how you come out with it!

All the best, Dan.

I've never used one, though they strike me as a poor idea.  If I were designing something to be well insulated, the last place I'd want to put it is somewhere that had the maximum airflow.
When I've carried a Thermos, it's been wrapped in a towel and in the saddlebag.  I'm not going to drink from it unless stopped and off the bike, I see no need to have it within reach whilst riding.
It's a few years since I've carried a Thermos, these days I carry a Primus Lite (A Jetboil style stove) and make a fresh brew when I stop. That is if I'm on a long solo ride (4hrs +) anything shorter and I won't bother, if I'm with company we'll usually stop at a cafe.

I have one. It is from my local big hardware store, which has a household hard goods department, and looks and works just like a standard Thermos because it is a standard Thermos, only slenderer, 70mm diameter. We never asked it to keep anything warm for the OP's four hours, but an hour or two that was more normal in our lanes didn't exceed its capability.

You can probably get a Thermos branded one from Amazon, or possibly several other designs, as 70mm diameter seems to be a standard for a "smaller" thermos, here using the concept as a generic.

Same here. A stainless steel Thermos brand. It is taller than my water bottles, holds 0.5 litre and fits the bottle holder perfectly.

Many thanks everyone. There’s a lot of choice in terms of capacity, effectiveness, durability and so on.

Thermos is a widely recognised brand so I’ll look at that one first.

Reading a few reviews on Amazon et.al.is quite informative.

Many thanks for the suggestions and links ( Dan) 😀

I have one of these https://www.blacks.co.uk/15998244/lifeventure-thermal-mug-15998244
Available in various colours, from Blacks or Millets (UK).
300ml - which is the right size for a standard coffee from the machines that are now in many small food shops and garages.
Fits snugly in my bottle cages.
Completely leak proof!

I'm really pleased to have it.  I can get a coffee and food, and then cycle to somewhere peaceful to sit and enjoy.
