Disappearing forum posts
« on: September 19, 2024, 10:02:40 AM »
Call me crazy but I’m fairly certain I made a post in Saturday the 14th, on my Outer Hebrides and North Coast 500 thread, and had received responses from in4 and Matt2matt, that are no longer there.
Has anyone else noticed a missing post?

Ron, you're not crazy! We were recently alerted to a "missing" For Sale post. I did not delete it and checked back through two years' worth of deleted posts and did not find it in the "old" queue nor in the recent ones, which can be recovered. Adrian and I are looking into it. It is definitely not normal and I appreciate the alert.

Best, Dan.

Is this your post, Ron?...
https://thorncyclesforum.co.uk/index.php?topic=15035.msg114323#msg114323

If so, I found it in SENT POSTS under your username. Now, I am checking the board structure to see if it appears there directly....
=====
EDIT: If this is it, it also "now" appears on the 14th under the board listing for 14 August for Outer Hebrides and North Coast 500. Looking for Advice topic here...

Please let me know if this is the post or if another one is missing. Thanks!

Best, Dan.

Ron,

I just received a reply from Adrian, which I can summarize/paraphrase here...

Quote
The company hosting the forum changed the server. To do this they moved a copy of the data from the old server to the new one. Then several days later the DNS settings were updated pointing the URL to the new server.
Any postings in this period were on the old server and lost in the changeover.
If the DNS change had occurred on the same day as the move this wouldn't have happened.

This has caused quite a few headaches with other data on this server!
Apologies to the forum users.

Hope this helps clear the mystery!

Dan.

Does the forum share the same server as SJS cycles?  That might explain why my links no longer worked until I cleared cookies. What a headache for them, hope they got it sorted.

There was a thread where someone was interested in a new Sherpa but as they are not made now was looking for alternatives - it may be me, but that thread seems to have vanished?  My last post there was to suggest he bought a secondhand one and recommissioned it.

There's some overlap but not total. For example, thumbnails of uploaded photos are stored in a different file than the attachments...on the same Forum server.

And yes, it can be a headache. Apologies to those inadvertently affected!

Best, Dan.

Thank you, Andy; much appreciated.

We were contacted by a seller who listed a Sherpa and whose ad was lost, so not exactly the same thread or topic, but I think the same pesky problem. Grrr! I can surely relate when posts are lost, as my own thumbnails were lost and photos corrupted on my Nomad topic in a past software upgrade that went sideways. Sighs and apologies to all; it is maddening when glitches occur!

Best, Dan.

It appears that the copy that was put on the new server was made on or soon after 26th August as there are no posts between that date and September 17th.

It wouldn't be so bad if it were a short-term, recoverable problem, a time-consuming, irritating nuisance.

But if this is a permanent loss... In the longer term that will be a much worse loss, especially as under Dan's moderatorship the Thorn Forum has become a reference source on so many things of interest to touring, commuting and utility cyclists. For instance, choosing subjects at random, not ranking them for importance, it is the best anglophone source on the Rohloff, on the Highlands and Islands, on transmission ratios, on wide tyres, on inflation regimes, on Chaingliders, on quality chains, on touring and daily luggage, on camping stoves, etc, etc, a seemingly infinite number of subjects both common and esoteric whose importance one doesn't notice when just reading the forum day by day, but the absence of which will hurt when one starts looking for just that particular bit of know-how.

Thanks for the kind words, Andre. Unfortunately, try as might it seems those posts for that 3-week period are unrecoverable. I remember reading them, as I have read every post from the Forum's inception. I followed closely for about 7 years before I formally joined in 2011 in anticipation of my Sherpa purchase and became Global Moderator in 2012 and Forum Administrator the year after to date. I'm gutted at the loss but feel fortunate it was not worse.

Onward, with additional content!

Best to all, Dan.
