Widest mudguards for Thorn Catalyst
« on: October 10, 2023, 01:52:07 pm »
My Catalyst frame is with a local frame builder at the moment as it's getting some adaptations as I turn it from an off road commuter into a more general purpose bike. I'd like to fit 2.1" gravelking tyres but I want full mudguards and want to check what are the widest guards anyone has fitted. Ideally I'd like to fit at least 60mm but don't want to order anything without knowing they'll fit. This is only for the rear, I've got the Pace RC31 forks which have loads of clearance.

Thanks

The info here http://thorncyclesforum.co.uk/index.php?topic=365.0 mentions 2.3" tyres "with sensible clearances". There's more info at http://thorncyclesforum.co.uk/index.php?topic=8579.0 with links to old brochures.

The most critical dimension is from the wheel centre to the bridges between the seat stay and chain stay. I recall trimming the edges of a mudguard when the gap between the stays wasn't wide enough for the mudguard width I wanted.

Thanks John. I think I'll wait till I have the frame back and go from there. And as you say I can potentially trim any part of the guards that may be too tight

Hi,
My Catalyst takes 55mm Velo Junior SKS mudguard and 2,2 Race King tires.
It looks like there is room for 60mm full SKS Bluemels but I think they won’t
be wide enough for 2,1 Gravelkings.
Cheers,
