Rhine

In a few weeks time my wife and I are heading for Germany with the intention of cycling a chunk of the Rhine. Neither of us have done anything like this before on bikes, we will be camping but no strangers to tents.  We intend it to be very leisurely no targets set, if we see something the plann is to spend time exploring, if an area looks like it needs two days so be it. The only problem I see with this approach is not being able to pre book a site more than a day or two in advance. I've been told there  are plenty of camp sites to choose from, anyone with experience of this, is finding a camp and availability likely to be a problem? Looking to do it before local Schools break up.

Be aware that the school holidays are staggered in Germany meaning you may find parts of Germany already on their school holidays already in June. North Rhein Westfalen begin theirs 25th June. At least other regions stagger in gradually, but not entirely void of German school holiday makers. https://www.schulferien.org/deutschland/ferien/2022/ is in German, but you can see who begins holiday and when.

As an aside, to encourage fuel saving during current crisis the Germans have introduced the Eur 9- ticket for bus and local rail networks nationwide from Jun-August. You can buy a month pass on arrival and enjoy most public transport without additional charge on that single ticket. Bikes cost extra if you want to ‚bike & Bahn‘ and the bike tickets are not subsided.
