New Sherpa

Built up using a new frame and forks, wheels from Spa cycles and bits left over from spliting my Giant Trance.  Weighs a ton but is bomb proof. Still to try it out.

what wheels did you go for,
im in the process of building up my own sherpa..
thinking of xt shimano.
still not sure what canteliver brakes to get,
im useing drop handlebars ..
anyway the wheels question ,what made your mind up ,on your choice.
what about tyre choice,,
 make and size did you get

I got deore hubs on rigeda sputnick rims. They are bomb proof if a touch heavy. I bought them because they were cycling plus best buy , the tyres are Schwable Marathon plus 1.5" because again they are very tough.

Just as a matter of interest I have Sputniks on my Club Tour. The pair I had built have fine machined grooves around the rim. They help braking I assumed. I have just fitted a newly built Sputnik with Dynamo hub. It has no machined grooves. Its raining today. I have been out for a ride (madness of course). The front brake is shall I say-not good! Maybe I shall need to use different brake pads.Grrr.

The Sputniks are bomb proof but are not light.  Merlin cycles will do 36 hole XT hubs on various mavic rims for less than £100 which be much lighter.

what about mavic 719 on xt hubs would they make a good wheel.
my friend loaned me a pair of mavic 717 on deore hubs,
to be honest ,there rubbish.i only got loan of them , to set up my bars and saddle height..
there also quiet heavy,so i wont be buying them,.

I would have thought 717 would be quite light. 719 is a touring rim.

well finally bought the wheels,sun rhyno on xt m770 hubs hand made by those good people at sjs
ive heard good things and bad about these wheels,all i can say is they look the buisness to me,i also got schwalbe marathon plus tyres,i would sware they weigh heaver than the wheels ,but a great tyre ,hope they roll as good as they look.

The Sherpa was great, reminded me of my first mountain bike a rigid 80's Specialised rockhopper. Bike managed the landrover tracks no bother. The marathon plus tyres are heavy but you have the security that they will not puncture.The bike and tyres are completly silent when on the road.

It was -4 when we started off.

I'm hoping to get my Sherpa out for a proper tour this summer in Northern Canada...   I'm still waiting to find some fenders I'm happy with to complete the build.
