Today my son and I had a short 10 mile ride to my daughter's house. Tomorrow we have a 50 mile ride planned

I'm going to start off with some day rides in the area where I live in South Wales.  I've got a copy of Lost Lanes Wales http://lostlanes.thebikeshow.net/ This has lots of good rides in it.  I then want to move on to something like Aberystwyth to Shrewsbury, Lon Cambria https://cycle.travel/route/lon_cambria or Abergavenny to Llandeilo https://cycle.travel/route/cycle_across_the_beacons before I work up to something like Lon Las Cymru https://cycle.travel/route/lon_las_cymru  and then who knows.  I quite like the idea of getting a ferry to Roscoff or St Malo, doing some cycling and returning from Cherbourg or Caen.
I don't want to get too ambitious too quickly.  I am expecting this bike to last for years, so there is plenty of time to build up to some real adeventures

I did a Wales coast to coast up the Wales/England border last year. Newport - Chester. I grew up near the border in N Wales but I was pleasantly surprised at the lovely riding and very quiet. It took 4 days including the trains at either end.

Last year my son did a trip around the coast of Wales starting at Cardiff then coming back from Chester to Newport and on to Cardiff.  He enjoyed his trip and as you say, Wales has some stunning scenery making for great rides

It looks very similar to my sherpa, Red, and you have the 853 fork, same as mine?  Good low gears as well.  The only real difference is that I have a Tubus rack.

I don't know any of the Welsh rides you refer to, but the Brittany / Normandy one would be good.  There is a cycle route from Mont St Michel to Paris which I have done (as far as Chartres anyway) which takes you well into Normandy, with I think a loop up to Caen or the Cotentin peninsula.  Lovely riding.

Not an 853 fork, as it has rack mounts on the fork legs.

Good plan to tour Brittany. I did Cherbourg to Roscoff a few years back. I used the tour de manche route. Lots of dusty rail paths and river trails.  Very pleasant cycling.  The welsh routes are also excellent and more challenging in terms of hills.
