Cable adjustments

Gday all,

I have just installed a Rohloff on my wife's bike. The installation was not too tricky and the hub is as expected- quite noisy in the low gears, quiet elsewhere.

My query is with the adjustment of the cable tension in an EX box.

How critical is the 200mm of inner beyond the outer?

Does the length of inner correspond to shifter response?

I found that I had to wind the cable adjusters a long way out and still had more than 2mm of play in the shifter. While on a test ride I remembered that I had not tightened up the setscrews in the cable pulley when one pulled out. I had to trim about 10-15mm of the end of one cable to get it back in without fraying. This made the shifting response a bit quicker with less play and much less cable adjustment used up. Its hard to say whether it made the shifting lighter as it seemed quite stiff from scratch.

So, to those who use the EX box, how much of the adjusters have you used up? Is your shifting stiff or smooth, and what length inner cable do you have out the end of the outer. Does the shifting also free up with time?

Sorry for the bombardment but figuring it out now means that when my Raven Tour arrives I can make it work nicely.

I can see 2 or 3 mm of thread on both adjusters - depends where you measure to, the adjuster screws into a curved piece.
The shifting is smooth, I tried the cables both slacker and tighter and found the changing worse so went back to a middle tension position as set by SJS.
I don't know what length the inner protrudes by, the fitting was done by SJS so I expect it is the advised 200mm.
The shifting has not changed - I am upto 1100 miles. The hub is getting smoother and quieter.
I think SJS fit brake outer to better take up any curves, although not as stiff lengthwise as gear outer it fails in a more graceful manner once it wears out.

This is an old thread I know, but it seemed best to resurrect this one rather than start a new one.

My Rohloff was installed by a LBS, and I am guessing they followed the manual to the letter, as it was their first time to install one. Anyway, almost a year later I have been changing the oil, etc, and I wanted to adjust the cable tension to reduce the amount of play in the shifter.

There is still slightly more than 2mm of play, but the adjusters are screwed out quite a way. Is this too much? Is there a maximum length of screw thread that should be exposed? If there is indeed a problem with my cables, what would be the best strategy to fix them?

Sorry to ask such patently obvious questions, but I am not very mechanically minded, and the manual makes my eyes cross!

Snoogly don,t worry to much about how far out you screw the adjuster as long as there is enough thread entering the threaded female barrel connector, its NICE to have the adjusters set around 50 %  to give the option of going in or out as required but not essential. Carefull not to go to tight as this will make shifting a little difficult to make.


Also note that if you need to line up the numbers on the twist shift with the red dot then loosen one adjuster and tighten the other

I will tweak it until I get a comfortable balance of play in the shifter, and ease of shifting.

While on the subject, I snapped one my adjuster bolts clean through, but have noticed no problems arising from it. It's screwed in a little less than halfway through its travel.

I have found that shifting gets lighter as the hub wears in.
