As I have mentioned before I have a Rohloff with chain drive and one with belt drive. The belt drive works as advertised, I have had no problems with it and Andre, I haven't noticed the belt picking up any oil from the hub.

However. I don't think I will do another belt drive, the difficulty is if you are going to change anything, cogs or belt wheels, its ridiculously expensive even before you consider the cost of a new belt and the new belt must be sized precisely.It just doesn't offer any huge advantage to offset those considerations.

As to South African delicacies I have little to offer, but I did have a South African girlfriend. That, I would recommend.

I lived in RSA for two years, and your recommendations as far as the girlfriend are spot on, I'd say. and with the current exchange rates .... ;)

Getting back to the subject of belt drives........
I was in York (UK) last week and looking at Riese & Muller bikes and they get round the "problem" of splitting the frame quiet well.
Loved their bikes but my budget does not stretch that far and getting them on & off trains would be a problem especially as the new trains require you to hang the bikes up by their front wheels.

Have a look at the way they have dropped the crank set/motor below the level of the chain stay.
To remove the belt you just drop the back wheel.

Interesting link, Jurr.

That looks like a retail DIY kit in the Split Gates Drive box shown in your link, complete with the necessary tool for setting the rivets joining the belt.

A boxed DIY kit is a really good mechanism to bring the price down as retailers compete agains each other.

been running a thorn mecury for 40,000 miles now thorn sprocket chain ring kmc chain and a belt drive cube the chain is as smooth and quit as the belt but lots more maint required

have not got the gates system but the veer done 6000 mls in the last 10 months no sighn of wear yet
