My new 610S Mercury, bespoke colour!
« on: July 05, 2017, 04:54:04 PM »
Set up for very light touring and audax rides.
I was going through Shimano components like crazy, hence the Rohloff.
It's super-lovely..... to me!  :D
Thanks to everyone at Thorn. I was exacting in my needs and they had to tolerate me - at times I must have driven them mad.

I first saw a Thorn about 7 years ago, on my daily commute. At last, I've joined the club!

Very nice and welcome! Did Thorn organise the colour for you?

I was umming and arring for months about this. Thing is, that I wanted to LOVE it! .... but the colour schemes that were on offer weren't really to my taste. So, the deal was that before building it up, Thorn kindly sent it to ColourTec in Dartford. I went there and gave David my instructions, essentially, dark/deep blue. I then waited for him to do it, returned, inspected it, paid him and then he sent it back to Thorn. They put the name/brand/Mercury symbol just below the seat post and Rohloff sticker on it - nothing else. They then built it up and sent it to me. I also asked Thorn for some components to be in black and not silver.

Viola!

I say in my original post that I probably tested their patience a bit!

The consequence of all this, is that I do indeed LOVE it!

What a wonderful bike. Just the kind I would like to park next to my Raven.
Can we see some more pictures please? And also the component specs.

I keep going back for "one more look". Lovely! Just as I'd set one up for myself, but perhaps in grey...though this bespoke dark blue is stunning.

Best,

Dan. (...who is going back for yet another look)

Super bike, John! That midnight blue'n'silver is a brilliant choice.

Enjoy the bike, and the envious glances :-)

Here are some more pics.

Braking: Shimano BR-R451 Deep Drop Caliper Brake - Black - Front, Shimano BR-R451 Deep Drop Caliper Brake - Black - Rear,
Cane Creek Drop Brake Levers - SCR5
Wheels: Rigida Chrina 700c , 622 Road Rim - Black - 32 Hole,
Front hub - SON 28

I'm happy with this first stab bar the caliper brakes which I think are a bit feeble.

Excellent. Many thanks.
Funny you should mention the brakes. I was going to ask why you chose that type.
Great pictures.

No doubt about it, that is a beauty.

I would have gone for discs myself but I accept that some people just don't like them.

My Rohloff geared bike has 26 inch wheels/straight bars/fat tyres. I've never ridden a Rohloff geared bike that has 700c wheels/drops/thinner touring tyres. I've always wondered what they are like, shame that I live a long way from Somerset.

Anyway, the weather is picking up....ENJOY !!!..... ;D

What a fantastic looking machine John, hope you are managing to get a few miles on it.

The colour really suits it, nice and understated. It's a very similar build to what I would opt for. Looking forward to hearing about your initial impressions of your new steed. I think a fair few of us on the forum would like some reviews of the Mercury as there isn't much out there, even on our forum.

Enjoy,
Neil
