audax under load.

So whats the worst that could happen to my lovely  new Audax if i were to load it up panniers front and back ,(not that it will ever happen) i'm just curious.

i was looking at the frame today ,still in the box, and it's a crackin frame for sure really well made and i reckoned it could take loaded panniers front and back no problem

u can see on utube  guys in India carrying half the town on the back of there cast iron bikes could you imagine the loads there would carry if they had a Thorn bike
anyway if i carried more than the recommended weight would my bike break.

Depends how much you load it down with Jags.
My size 600 Audax mk3 coped fine with four panniers and a tent, for three weeks of lejog six years ago.
It was a bit flexy at the front end but no problem.
Your smaller frame should handle a reasonable amount of luggage easily.

Rual you could pass for James Bond in that photo 

yeah i was thinking it would handle a load but to be honest i'll be going as light as i can .
my tent is a bit on the heavy side but the rest of my gear is lightweight.
pilot could do with dropping a few stone tho.

Anto, our man Graham Smith (a.k.a. 'Vintage tourer') has written about touring fast & light with his red Audax here:  https://www.crazyguyonabike.com/doc/?o=tS&doc_id=14619&v=OS

When I was considering which Thorn touring bike to buy, I had a brief correspondence with Graham about his experience with the Sherpa. He reckoned that Thorn frames are robust and well-made, maybe even overbuilt.  Since you're not looking at expedition touring, I'd be surprised if you have any problems at all with your Audax.

yes there a great frame for sure ,i like the idea of going light but still been comfy,i think the more bags a fells has the more he will load unwanted gear into them.
i'll pop over to graham site now and have a look . it's 1am here and im feckin wide awake ,

I agree with rualexander; handles well with 4 'not too heavy' panniers (2.5kg in each front and
 5-6kg on back) but a wee bit bendy in a side wind.
