Get my Nomad dirty?
« on: December 01, 2015, 05:27:58 PM »
Okay....daft question time.

I appreciate the Nomad was built to explore the world but after my Scottish trip in September I have only been out 3 times for some wandering 1/2 days.

I need something to use over the winter but I have cleaned and ACF'd the Nomad and it just looks too nice to use.  ::)

I need something that will allow me to play when it's not too bad, but road only. I'm too knackered to be playing on a mountain bike.

I quite like the idea of something lighter, and have seen the ebay advert for the Audax Mk1 below.

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/SJS-Thorn-Audax-Mk1-Classic-Gents-Road-Touring-Bike-23-5-Reynolds-Mix-Rare-VVGC-/111836727879?hash=item1a09fd0a47:g:6E8AAOSwv-NWW0hE

Would this be sacrilege to just use it as a winter bike? Maybe it would allow me to train on a lighter machine before loading the Nomad and playing with that?

Yeah I think the ability to put wider tires on the Nomad will be a real plus in the winter. Plus the Rohloff isn't going to get all jammed up with snow and ice. I'd be riding the Nomad in winter and the Audax in the summer!

Last week I got my old derailleur lightweight out of storage for a commute to work and back. This is 58 kms - most days I use a Brompton folder and trains.

The derailleur bike was a wee bit faster than my Raven Tour, but the weather forecast of no rain was wrong, so any time I gained while cycling will be more than offset by the time required to clean the derailleurs, chain, sprockets, etc.

I'm getting the gist of the answers!

Righty ho.....it was probably a lame excuse to buy another toy, the wife was in support as well. I will have to engineer something else now.

Thanks.

nice new lightweigh audax with super slick tyres great light system  full mudguards even tho im not a big fan of full mudguards but this time of year why not  keep a fella dry.
yeah a fella could enjoy a good 3or4 hour spin on a machine like that.

as the man said you'll be dead a long time enjoy it all while your still above ground.

Oops.  Sorry.  Did not realize the goal was to justify buying another toy.  Yeah, the Nomad is a terrible winter bike.  You definitely need a new bike.

Mickeg....that's more like it, I shall slightly edit your text and show the wife that it is necessary.....and jags...it's that logic that explains why my underwear is well out of fashion, but the toys are shiny. You can't have it all etc.

I am going to use my long haul trucker as the donor for most parts.  I am not going to do any more touring on 700c, so this frame is probably more applicable.

My Sherpa and Nomad will serve my future touring needs.

I like it. 8)
why no more tour on 700c are u going off road.
i'm sorry i ever sold my sherpa but the guy that bough it will get better use out of it than i did.
but if i had to keep it there would be a few changes like a carbon fork and lighter wheels.
sjs built the wheels for me done a great job but to heavy for my liking.

good luck with the new bike it's a cracker.

...

No need to have a 700c touring bike if I already own a Nomad and Sherpa.  Sherpa works just fine as a road touring bike with 40mm wide tires, I used to think of it as my off road touring bike but 500 miles around Glacier and Waterton covinced me that it does pavement just fine.  I switch to 50mm wide tires for off road.

And I do not have a 700c dynohub wheel, but I do have a 26 inch dynohub wheel, so it makes sense if I want to charge devices to use a dynohub wheel for touring.

I did not like the LHT when touring with it, so I decided to replace it.  But decided not to replace it with a touring bike when I could get a lighter bike that handles a bit more like a rando bike.

My son rides my lovely Raleigh 753 must be 30 years old at this stage he loves it ,but to be honest i love my new carbon bike crackin bike especially going up hill ;)

i always hated the sherpa when it came to going up hill ,but then again im not as fit or strong as i once was.the carbon bike i ride makes for easier cycling to be honest.
but yeah for long days in the saddle the sherpa was a great ride even off road  not that i done that very often.if ever i get money i'll buy another thorn for touring ::)
