Transcontinental 2015
« on: November 29, 2014, 09:47:14 PM »
Hi,

Just been notified that I have a place on the TCR2015.   Oh err...it's a lot of miles from Flanders to Istanbul!   My plan is to use the Thorn Club Tour (4) with Surly Long Haul Trucker forks, as my race bike.   I wonder how many training miles it will take, 6000 miles?

Doug (now quite nervous)

Is this the around the world trip?
Got a link for it?
Do you buy certain sections/legs?

Matt

All encouragement and best luck to you, Doug!

Better to have tried and lost than not to try at all. This is doable, and I think you stand a very good chance of completing the route and in a very good time. Why not try for a win?

All the best,

Dan. (...who looks forward to following your progress in the race)

Wow!  Doug, what a challenge/opportunity, something to tell us, and later your grandchildren.  6,000 miles is a long ride, for sure -- maybe try doing it in kms instead, they seem longer 'cos there's more of them, but 'cos they're smaller, they go by more quickly.  Good luck with your training, & even more with the ride itself -- we'll applaud everything, you may be sure.

thanks guys.   the race route itself (this year) seems to be around the 4000km mark, but I'm just guessing that the training miles will be around 10,000km.  No idea yet.

An interesting article on the Brooks site (they are sponsors) : http://blog.brooksengland.com/wps/the-next-crazy-venture-beneath-the-skies-transcontinental-race/

the race manual is quite readable (until the small print), and mildly amusing.

Well done Doug, going public and paying the entry fee should stiffen your resolve.

Keep us informed. You can be "the fastest hobo in Europe"!

Bonne chance
Ian

Very interesting and good luck.
I did read the bumf but didn't pick out the approx distance and approx times folk take.
Any ideas on these?

this year (August) the first guy was there in 8 days, doing about 3,500km.   for 2015 (different control points), the start is midnight on the 24/25th July in Flanders, the party in Istanbul is on the 8th August.   So that gives 14 days to do, what appears to be, about 4000km.   14 days is 285km per day, 12 days 333km per day, 10 days 400km per day.

There are four fixed control points (in France, Croatia, Montenegro, Istanbul) along the way, but you choose your own route between them.   Everyone has a GPS tracker with live updates, and following the racers on the online map can be quite addictive.

Panic has not set in yet, I expect it'll be along shortly  :)

cheers,
