In fact, I was about to send Jim a PM, so I'll do so publicly.  Hope you and your family are OK, safe in the rain/snow shadow of the Catskills & Adirondacks. 

Buffalo always gets, well, buffaloed by a lot of snow, as does Oswego, at the eastern end of Lake Ontario: warmer winds from the SW sweep across Lakes Michigan, Erie & Ontario, and dump their moisture when they hit the higher ground in upstate NY.  Buffalo's current situation seems almost biblical, with a winter's worth of snow in three or four days -- not sure who the residents might have offended to deserve this.  It's about to start raining, too, so all that snow will just be a sponge -- very dangerous for roofs, esp any that are not steeply pitched.  City government has probably exhausted its snow-removal budget before winter has even started, and Buffalo is hardly wealthy enough to just dial in more $$. NY State gvt has pitched in, which is helpful.

Thanks for the thoughts but that whole mess is a long way from here. The whole lake effect thing doesn't reach too far. I think that by the time you're halfway across the state, it has pretty much dissipated. And we're all the way east.

It's about 10 degrees F below normal, so a bit nippy. I was out for about 25 miles on Tuesday. Mostly comfortable despite the freezing wind, but my toes got really cold. So I do need to upgrade my foot system. I got my studded tires out of storage, so now I need to put them on the bike, along with the annual oil change. We have a few warm days coming up but then it looks like it will turn cold again.

Good news, Jim, and good luck when you get your studded Nomad on the road again.  Pretty cold here just now, for mid-Nov: serious NW wind this morning, -18 windchill  :-(   Good basement-workshop weather, so I tidied up my old ti-framed Eclipse, new Marathon Racer 35mm tires, not to be used 'til spring, I guess; the semi-annual rear derailleur adjustment, which I had nearly forgotten about since my induction into the Church of Rohloff; cleaning & adjusting the brakes. 

And a few small jobs on the Raven, which fall into the "getting to know you" category: oil change (telescopic-wand magnetized small-bits retriever was useful here, as the wee drain plug tried to run away & hide); and taking up some of the chain slack after the first season. Have some new Marathon Supremes en route from starbike in Deutschalnd, again not be use used for a few months yet.

John, I generally pre-solve the problem by setting my repair stand in a child's (dry) wading pool. Presto! Any dropped parts are contained within a searchable space and easy to find (provided they are not also "pool blue" ).

John, I generally pre-solve the problem by setting my repair stand in a child's (dry) wading pool. Presto! Any dropped parts are contained within a searchable space and easy to find (provided they are not also "pool blue" ).

No doubt they'll come demanding a licensing fee on the morrow. Schwalbe had to pay them one for using blue on their tire gauges. Says so on every package.

Sounds like the weather s'no problem for Jim at the moment.

I generally pre-solve the problem by setting my repair stand in a child's (dry) wading pool.

We had a wading pool this summer, for our Aussie grand-daughter -- since gave it away to the neighbours.  I use an old cotton sheet on these occasions, which normally works, but the 3mm drain plug seemed to have enough mass/determination to seek out The Land Beyond The Dropsheet.  It reckoned without my magnetized wotsit, bought a couple of years ago after I managed to drop the ignition keys to my airhead into a remote & inaccessible nook (or was it a cranny?) of my airhead's fairing.  Since buying the wotsit, I've never dropped my keys into either nook or cranny, but it's retrieved a few little washers, drain plugs, etc., from their hiding places.

I thought I told you to keep quiet about that common blue tire gauge of yours, Dan. Elegant cyclists have the black gauge with the same gubbins from BBB.

Half the price too, double the superiority.
